CHEAP EATS: Quarrel Wonton

2018-03-27 ShanghaiWOWeng

In its 20+ years of service, this hidden gem near Huanghe Road has earned an amusing reputation among wonton shops in Shanghai. Owned by an old couple known for "frequently quarreling" with one another, this traditional shop was labeled as the “quarrel shop” by its regular customers and has embraced the nickname ever since.

So much, in fact, that it has taken on “Quarrel Wonton” as its official name after recently re-opening its doors to the public, welcoming both regular and new customers with simple yet tasty flavors.

Originally opened on Datian Road and now located on Dingxin Road, hidden behind old houses on the rather unpopular Huanghe Road near Suzhou Creek, Quarrel Wonton is mostly frequented by local residents from the neighborhood, which can make it difficult for the couple to keep their small business afloat in such a competitive industry.

The owners keep it simple with only 5 tables and a comparatively clean interior, and have just recently added a new variety of noodles to the menu. Their high table turnover will allow you to claim your seat fairly quickly.

With thick fillings surrounded by thin skin, wontons at Quarrel Wonton maintain the classic Shanghai flavors.

Thin but packed with delicious fillings, their handmade wontons bring a springy texture to the experience. Their soup base is made from egg skin, seaweed, chives and shrimp, thus giving it a rich flavor and leaving customers always craving more.

The fresh and juicy meat found in some of their wontons flows perfectly with the soup when bitten into, while their vegetarian wontons offer a healthy mix of leeks and greens.

When opening their wontons with your chopsticks, expect delicious chunks of tender pork belly to drop into the red sauce, which pairs particularly well with a bowl of noodles.

The shop uses pure pork lard - an uncommon ingredient - which enhances the flavor of their dishes with its strong, aromatic smell.

Uncooked wontons are also available for sale and pre-order, and the owner keeps tabs on the delivery address of their regular customers. How’s that for great wonton customer service?!

The spicy meat noodles are one of many great dishes served at Quarrel Wonton, which comes with a hefty portion of meat. The noodles aren’t sticky nor rough; every strand stacks up the memorable flavor of the soup, and the portions are large enough to order for two.

The half-cooked poached eggs compliment the bowl of noodles with their slightly salty taste, and the evenly-sized, tofu served in their white ceramic bowls look really appetizing.

And yes, the pork is as good as it looks.

Spoons are arranged neatly and placed in baskets with meticulous care, thereby satisfying even their most OCD diners.

Despite the new address, the couple seems to have kept the culture of the old shop alive by continuing to fight frequently. Simple and satisfying, this wonton gem is a must-try.
