New Opening: Get Your Vegan On at Graze

2018-03-28 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

A new kid is on the block and it’s tearing up the vegan lunch scene. Introducing my new favorite café: Graze. It’s so healthy and clean and white and healthy and pure… and stuff (usually everything that would send me running for the hills and immediately ordering a McDonalds breakfast, double sausage please). However, I was pleasantly surprised by Graze and I’m adding it to my favorite coffee shop list.

Address: 626 Changle Road

Opening times: Mon – Fri 9am-7pm. Sat & Sun 10am-7pm

[Deal Alert] Graze are offering 10% off all drinks for Shanghai WOW! readers. Just show this article when you order.

Graze actually doesn’t describe themselves as a ‘vegan’ café but as a ‘plant-based’ café. I looked like a complete ignoramus and asked to have this concept explained to me so you don’t have to. The manager filled me in as follows: "being vegan in China is hard, it’s really hard, especially if you’re Chinese and have to bow to family pressure at big events and festivals. Being planted-based is like a relaxed version of being vegan. Where people do their absolute best to steer clear of all animal-based products. At Graze we want to help facilitate that."

Their coffee is reasonably priced and delicious, a Cappuccino will set you back a modest RMB 29. Any coffee shop that serves nicer coffee than Starbucks and charges less gets a big win in my book. Starbucks = the devil.

They have a great range of cakes and cookies you can grab on-the-go that are all made in-house. My favorite was the Peanut Butter and Chocolate cookie RMB 16.

Then we got on to the sandwiches… My standard pick would be cheese and ham (basic bitch, I know) or parma ham and brie if I’m being fancy… So when I was steered toward the vegan egg and cheese option (RMB 45) I wasn’t feeling very hopeful.

THEN THIS ARRIVED.

And I got super hopeful again.

The ‘egg’ is made from chickpea flourr and the cheese is made from potato and carrot puree, topped off with sour cream made from coconut milk. It was a weird experience biting into an egg and cheese sandwich that tasted nothing like egg and cheese. IT TASTED BETTER. It was light and fresh and absolutely delicious. I was full for hours after and it left me with a healthy-feeling tummy and a clean conscience.

And then I ruined the health by going for a waffle coated in chocolate sauce, maple syrup, bananas and walnuts (RMB 52). It’s the perfect end to a healthy plant-based meal. I would recommend splitting this with a friend whilst you sip on cashew and pumpkin seed lattes.

All in all, I was super impressed by Graze and would recommend stopping by for a coffee and a snack at the next possible opportunity.
