Spring is amazing, but it goes by pretty quickly here in China. Before we find ourselves feeling too hot and steamy, why not use your Qingming holiday for some travel? Here are 6 destinations that are perfect to visit in the spring. I know the holiday is only 3 days long, and some of these places are a little bit far from Shanghai, but they totally worth it, even for a quick trip.

Wuyuan, Jiangxi

Highlight: Ancient town

How to get there: High-speed train

Distance: 4 hours from Shanghai

Wuyuan County is a subordinate county of Shangrao City in Jiangxi Province. Wuyuan is known as the “the hometown of literature and tea,” and is hailed as “the most beautiful village in China”. The quiet town is famous for its ancient houses, stone paths, bridges, and green mountains surrounded by water.

From March to April, it’s the best time to see the blooming rape flowers, and Jiangling Village is the best spot to enjoy these along with beautiful rural scenery.

Xinghua, Jiangsu

Highlight: Rape flowers

How to get there: Bus

Distance: 3 hours from Shanghai

Whenever the spring comes, this small city gets quite busy and welcomes visitors from all over China for its spectacular rape flower. During this time period, visitors can also enjoy the unique performances of the "Water Stage" at Wujindang.

Yangzhou, Jiangsu

Highlight: Slender West Lake

How to get there: Bus

Distance: 3 hours from Shanghai

If you haven’t been there yet, spring is the best time to visit Yangzhou. In the Qing Dynasty, Yangzhou once had the reputation of being “the landscape of the world,” and to this day it retains many excellent classical gardens such as Slender West Lake, Daming Temple, Geyuan and Heyuan, among others. These are the most famous tourist attractions in Yangzhou.

Danba Tibetan Village, Sichuan

Highlight: Tibetan village

How to get there: Flight+Bus

Distance: 3-hour flight from Shanghai to Chengdu, 9-hour bus from Chengdu to Danba

Danba Tibetan Village is 348 kilometers west of Chengdu, and known as one of the most beautiful ancient villages in China. Getting there might be tiring, but it’s definitely worth visiting.

In Danba, hundreds of residences were built in harmony with the natural environment, reflecting the concept of unity between man and nature. If you visit during the end of March, you will see thousands of pear blossoms bloom in the mountains and throughout the fields.

Daocheng County, Sichuan

Highlight: The last Shangri-La

How to get there: Flight

Distance: 3-hour flight from Shanghai to Chengdu, 2-hour flight from Chengdu to Daocheng

If you are going to Danba, why not stop by Daocheng for “the last pure land on the blue planet?” Also located in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan, this "last Shangri-La" is divided into two parts: Daocheng and Aden, with snow-capped mountains, glaciers, canyons, forests, meadows, and lakes.

Daocheng was first discovered in 1928 by the American explorer Joseph Locke. He published the photos he photographed in the National Geographic magazine, causing a great sensation.

Hanzhong, Shaanxi

Highlight: Chinese history

How to get there: High-speed train

Distance: 8 hours from Shanghai

Hanzhong City is referred to as "Han," and is located in the southwestern part of Shaanxi Province. As the birthplace of the Han nationality, the city counts more than 2,300 years of history to date.

Hanzhong is also hailed as having "the most beautiful rape flowers in China". In the spring each year, millions of acres of rape flowers bloom simultaneously, transforming the whole mountain stream into a golden blaze. Be sure to try out the Shaanxi style food there as well.
