New Opening: Taco Laoban

2018-03-30 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

There is a new Mexican restaurant entering the fiesta, and it is delllish. Introducing: Taco Laoban, the literal boss of tacos.

Taco Laoban is nestled along Wujiang pedestrian street, that weird little strip in the middle of West Nanjing's busy shopping area. It is the perfect place to stop by for a quick bite when you’re feeling drained from a MINISO shopping spree.

Taco Laoban is the brainchild of Luis Rodriguez, a Shanghaier hailing from Mexico, and his partner Emily Xu. They'd been longing for a taco bar where anyone could grab a quick bite, maybe a beer, and be on their way- no muss, no fuss. And so Taco Laoban was born. It's also REALLY worth mentioning that this is authentic Mexican fare, NOT TEX MEX. The interior is bright and friendly with a super chilled out vibe. You might be tempted to stay for more than one Corona.

The outside terrace is going to be a dream spot as the good weather continues and we sail into summertime. You can watch the shoppers of Wujiang Lu waltz by below as you eat this:

Torilla Chips with Salsas, Sauces and refried beans RMB 25

 And this:

‘The Laoban’ RMB 90

Tacos are their main game, but some other excellent options are on the menu as well like nachos and ‘The Laoban,’ based off of a traditional Mexican dish called a campechana. This gargantuan tortilla stuffed with avocado, cheese and beef steak is going to keep you full for hours.

When it comes to tacos you are literally swamped with options. They have six different varieties ranging from a simple chicken to a more decedent Barbacoa (beef tongue), which you can then top off with sauces and salsa to best suit your personal taste.

Watch me sauce up:

And probably the best part: they're affordable enough to go wild. You can order a single taco for RMB 20 or go mad and get three for RMB 48. I recommend getting the Barbacoa, Al Pastor “Trompo” and the Beef Steak. Go full meat… and believe me, you will want three.

Address: 168 Wujiang Road

Opening times: Mon – Fri 11:30am - 10:30pm, Sat & Sun 11:30am-11:30pm
