5 Essential Beauty Products For Spring

2018-03-31 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

Shanghai WOW! has teamed up with Ojaba Cesario from Beauty in Shanghai to bring you the best beauty advice out there, specially tailored to expats living in Shanghai. Here are her top tips on everything you need to have beautiful skin this spring.

Now we are going into spring and it’s time to correct all the damage the Shanghai winter has done to our faces. Shanghai really puts our skin through its paces. The pollution and cold wet air are not exactly optimal conditions for our skin. I have listed 5 products you can buy at your local Watson’s or Health food shop (read: Avocado Lady), that are gentle, inexpensive and will help with the spring recovery.

Chifure Washable Cold Cream

Chifure washable cold cream is a great cleanser. If you're not into using oils, or you like to switch it up a bit with your cleansers, this cream/balm gets every scrap of dirt off and I mean everything. It’s a thick cream that you put on dry skin and then take off with a warm damp flannel. I tend to wear a lot of heavy, long-lasting foundations on the weekends and this completely eradicates every scrap of makeup. It's definitely something I would repeatedly repurchase.

Cetaphil

This product does what it says on the tin. It is a gentle skin cleanser with a simple formula that doesn't irritate. If you feel your skin is extra sensitive at the moment, or you are getting spots or skin irritations, this cleanser may be able to help. I first started using this product when I was 21 and had annoying spots on my cheeks. After researching, and a lot of trial and error, I realized the main culprit was me. I wasn't cleansing properly. This cleanser is nice for cleaning the actual skin, not just removing makeup. It will leave your face feeling clean without stripping the skin. It's a great basic!

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel, now we are going into hydration. I have been using this product for years. I really enjoy layering this with my moisturizer when I am feeling like my skin is a bit dry or just wearing as my moisturizer on top of my serum. Classic good buy, light-weight gel, no oil, great for oily dehydrated skin.

ZA True White Power Block UV

We should all be using SPF all year round and this is a good one that doesn’t leave your skin ashy or oily. First of all, let's address the name of the product, sounds a tad scary. Is it going to make you look like Micheal Jackson? Well... no. This is a Japanese brand so I think the name is just used for marketing. If you are looking for a super lightweight, colorless SPF that mattifies and smooths the skin this is the one for you.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is an amazing product. The only thing on this list that you can't buy in Watsons, but you can find it in the Avocado Lady and various other expat shops, as well as Taobao. You can use this product directly on dry skin to do an oil cleanse. Or you can use it as a moisturizer. Give your face a spritz with water (not from a Shanghai tap obviously) and then take a small amount of coconut oil and smooth it over your face.

Living in Shanghai it’s sometimes difficult to know what to buy in terms of skin care, there are a lot of brands that we don’t know stacked on the shelves. Watson’s is great because it stocks a lot of products that I do know and have been using for years and also we can discover great Asian brands. Next Time you’re in Watson’s, have a little rummage and see what you can find.
