MovOr | Teaching You How To Move

2018-04-01 Josh ShanghaiWOWeng

Do you like to go to the gym? OF COURSE NOT. We don’t judge you for it though, and neither do ambitions trainers @ MovOr.

What is MovOr?

MovOr, short for Movement Origins, provides professional training and education on what they define as being “Simply Human,” a state in which you can move with confidence and without hesitation nor fear of being judged or injured, and in whatever way you like. No pressure - just pure enjoyment.

MovOrs strive to be Simply Human. The main goal of this training is not to get faster, stronger, or more muscular, but instead to prioritize natural movements and adaptability. Through movement exploration, complexity, and play, the training investigates our natural movement capability, creates a mindful attitude, and cultivates awareness.

“MovOrs are generalists. We don't try to be very good at one thing, we try to be able to do everything a little bit.”

Throughout history, humans have had to adapt to a lot of different environments and do a lot of different things, and while children often still move this way, we as adults tend to forget. We now live in cities where we walk and sit, or specialize in one or several.

The problem with this current state is that our bodies were made for variations in our environment and movement. MovOr aims to remove such limitations and re-socialize the idea of being playful.

“There is no wrong or right or wrong, there is only how we can grow and enjoy our own movements.”

What’s the point?

MovOr offers more than just exercise: it gives you insight. It is a way to move holistically, prevent injury, and train for longevity. Regardless of your fitness level,  MovOr works to allow you to move more freely and to help you adapt to situations that may require creative movements.

Movement Origins, the parent company of MovOr, organizes certifications, workshops, and camps that support and cultivate the MovOr values, often bringing movement masters from overseas to teach in China. They also work with several local gyms, CrossFits, and other trainers to offer MovOr courses and knowledge to the wonderful people of Shanghai!

Who’s running the show?

Oki is the founder of MovOr, and has been a strong advocate of movement-with-purpose practices all his life. After specializing for over 30 years in martial arts including Judo, Fencing, Archery, Kung Fu, Kendo and Capoeira, Oki realized that all these specializations eventually lead to many injuries.

As he was looking for a more holistic approach, he started studying Natural Movement and methods to rehabilitate his body by seeking out masters like Erwan LeCorre, Ido Portal, and Thomas Myers. He eventually connected his own holistic training to prehab-rehab by incorporating systems such as MovNat, Animal Flow, Ground Force Method, FMS and KMI.

Even though he continues to struggle with limitations in flexibility and strength in parts of his body that have been neglected for a long time, he now knows that through exploration and awareness most conditions can be drastically improved.
