Zakuzaku's Japanese Dessert is Shanghai's Latest Craze

2018-04-03 ShanghaiWOWeng

As we strolled around the IFC mall in Pudong in search of the world-famous patisserie Lady M (which usually isn’t too hard to find given the never-ending line of hungry fans standing outside), we stumbled upon a new Japanese dessert store around the corner that sparked our curiosity.

Already popular in Nanjing and Xiamen, Zakuzaku (officially named Zakuzaku Croquant Choux; quite a mouthful) is giving Lady M a run for their money with a brand new shop here in Shanghai, and has already generated its own following with equally-long queues.

But if all they serve are ice creams and cream puffs, how on earth did they get so popular?!

Popular dairy ice cream from Hokkaido

6.5 swirls of this creamy goodness.

Zakuzaku ice cream is made using fresh milk from grass-fed cows raised in Hokkaido as well as pure water, so expect nothing but the best there. The little chunks of almonds sprinkled around add the perfect crunch to your cream, creating an experience sweet enough without being too overpowering.

Not only do they taste amazing, but Zakuzaku servings are also 1.5 to 2 times bigger than the average ice cream with a whopping 6.5 swirls - about the size of an iPhone 6! Thanks to the high quality of their ingredients, the ice cream stands firm and proud: in other words, the dripping days are over.

So, it seems that the combination of their aesthetically-pleasing facilities and the delicious taste of their ice cream has played a major role in their growing popularity both in China and abroad.

Although their packaging is rather simple, the ice cream itself is full of texture and flavor: a capture of this white, creamy and crunchy ice cream will surely get you noticed on Instagram.

Unique and innovative puff pastry at Zakuzaku

Not only can you easily eat it on the go, but it also looks surreal.

Zakuzaku is very creative when it comes to pastry innovation, as evidenced by the deliciously sinful cream puffs that they prepare which, for the record, also look amazing! Everything is made fresh to order and sells out almost as soon as they’re ready, so you’re guaranteed to get the best of tastes, provided you’re quick enough to get your hands on one.

Just like their ice cream, puffs are also covered in little bits of high-quality almonds to add a crunch to your treat. You’ll taste its fragrant cream gush into your mouth from the first bite, which will drive you to a state of pure happiness.

A picture of your Zakuzaku ice cream or cream puff (or both?) on your Moments promises to make you an instant trendsetter and leave your friends uber jealous. So get down there and try it out for yourself!
