Where to Buy the Best Cold Cuts in Shanghai

2018-04-05 Sophie ShanghaiWOWeng

While everyone is going on their trendy vegan diets, I’m all about the high protein and red meat. With Spring around the corner, every night I’m in the mood for a bottle of wine, some fancy cheese, and a plate full of cured meats, sausages, and cold cuts for some after-work nibbles. Here are my favorite places around the city to find the best imported meats for the tastiest charcuterie plate.

GL Plaza Supermarket

Address: GL Plaza Xintandi, B1, No. 1-6, Lane 222, Madang Road

Tel: NA

Hours: Monday-Sunday 10am-10pm

For a wide selection of everything you could ever want for a picnic, stop into the GL Plaza Supermarket located in the heart of Xintandi. This little grocery store has got it going on when it comes to wine selection and imported meats and cheeses. We are particularly blown away by the wide variety of imported meats and cold cuts that would allow anyone to make the best charcuterie plate Shanghai has ever seen.

From cured Iberian Acorn-Fed Shoulder (RMB 242.80 per 100 grams) to Spanish Dry Cured Ham (RMB 69.80 per 100 grams), GL Plaza Xintandi can meet all of your prosciutto needs. If you’re after sausages and salamis, you’ve got dozens of options as well ranging from RMB 11.80-53.80 per 100 grams.

City Super

Address: Multiple locations around Shanghai

If you’re an expat living in Shanghai, there’s no way you haven’t experienced the luxury grocery shopping experience that is City Super. From high end produce to imported Western goods, City Super makes you feel like you’re in a Whole Foods in New York rather than a grocery store in China. The deli selection is particularly outstanding, with a variety of salamis, hams, cured meats, and sausages to rival any butcher shop.

We particularly love their Monesano Serrano Cured Ham (RMB 63 per 100 grams) and their Salami Ungherese (RMB 18.80 per 100 grams), which pair perfectly with some French brie, crispy crackers, and a bottle of red.

Epermarket

Website: https://www.epermarket.com

For a huge variety of cold cuts and cured meats that you don’t need to leave the comfort of your home for, look no further than one of the most convenient online retail option, Epermarket. After starting up about 3 years ago, Epermarket has grown at an exponential rate, with offered products ranging from the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Thailand, and beyond. Epermarket makes it easy to put together some excellent meat trays for any gathering with just the click of a button. With same day delivery options, there’s rarely a reason to go to an actual store anymore.

The EperSelect Turkey Breast (RMB 52 for 300 grams) is a great option for easy weekday sandwich lunches and the EperSelect Bresaola (RMB 45 for 95-105 grams) is so tasty, we can eat a whole pack plain without blinking an eye!

Fields

Website: https://www.fieldschina.com

Fields is another winner when it comes to the online grocery shopping game, and with a selection as big as any physical store, there’s no reason not to check it out. Fields definitely has more specialty meats when compared to Epermarket (so it can be more expensive), but the quality and taste is incomparable.

Fields also recently partnered with Shanghai’s own Chef Austin Hu to create the “Fields Deli by Austin Hu” line of products. Featuring a variety of cold cuts and pickled vegetables, the New York Jewish Deli lover in me is smiling. The jar of Pickled Beetroot (RMB 59 for 300 grams) had me putting beetroot on everything I made for an entire week, and the Proper American Bacon (RMB 59 for 200 grams) truly lives up to it’s name by having the exact ratio of meat to fat that crisps up and then just melts in your mouth.

Alimentari

Address: 158 Anfu Lu

Tel: 5403 6991

Hours: 8am - midnight

Alimentari is everyone’s new favourite spot for your bread, cheese and wine fix. But they also have and amazing array of cold cuts with everything from pepper pastrami (RMB 21 for 100 grams) to the classic Salami Milano (RMB 26 for 100 grams) and one of my personal favourites their pancetta (RMB 17 100grams) ask for it to be cut in long thin strips and it’s perfect to wrap around asparagus and oven bake, or to slice and throw into a carbonara.

Pichet

Address: 758 Julu Lu, 1/F

Hours: 11:30am - 10pm

Pichet is everything French you could ever want and need. Soft and hard cheeses, you have to try the homemade truffle brie (RMB 138). An amazing cold cuts selection as well as in house smoked salmon, homemade terrines, sandwiches (RMBN 68) for when you’re on the go and fresh Oysters.
