260,000sqm Changning Raffles City Guide

2018-04-07 ShanghaiWOWeng

Raffles City, the mall well known in Shanghai for its prime location at the base of a People’s Square skyscraper, is opening up another venue at Zhongshan Park, and it is massive. With forty brands spanning four buildings, 8 stories, and a huge lawn to boot, the new complex is about half the size of Vatican City. And it’s got some historical elements too: built on the site of 1920s-era St. Mary’s Girls School (alma mater of Shanghai’s iconic writer Eileen Chang/Zhang Ailing), several of the school’s Bryant Park-inspired halls and its clock tower have been preserved to give the place an old-timey (old school?) touch.

But let’s talk about what’s inside this new Raffles City.

Cafes, Tea and Dessert

The tea house selection is rather off the hook: Gaga, home of fresh fruit teas made with French-imported jelly and served in designer cups, is making their Shanghai debut in a 1950s and 60s-inspired 2-story villa inside the complex. They are also serving meals and afternoon tea.

Then there’s Cat’s Eye in the Tea House, an up-and-coming Shanghai brand which cooks its (carbonated) tea at -18 degree C for over 20 hours and only uses Taiwan’s golden tea leaves found 800 – 1000m above sea level.

Or else there’s industrial chic OT, which aims not just to serve tea but to educate sippers about how it’s made, using the equipment in the shop and an old, low fire cooking method (which apparently also makes the shop smell awesome).

The StayReal fashion brand has also launched a café concept: an art space where customers can enjoy creations like Rose Cheese Latté and Rose Strawberry Ice Latté, only available at the Raffles City Changning location, along with a menu of interesting dishes including milk tea with black pearls pancake, vanilla cream seafood soup, and French curry beef pasta.

Dining

The new Raffles City restaurants are repping a wide variety of global and domestic cuisines: the French restaurant, Terroir Parisien is laid out to look like the streets of Paris, with an outdoor seating area to enjoy menu favorites like French toast with a side of ice cream. Morton’s, the steakhouse beloved by American presidents and Hollywood stars alike, will be on scene, with chefs serving up perfectly marbled American Prime and prime lion steaks.

The Paulaner Restaurant has taken a spot in one of the old school halls, where diners and drinkers can enjoy Bavarian hospitality, German beers and cuisine, and European-imported décor. Marzano will be serving their menu of traditional and locally inspired Italian dishes, like the Peking duck thin-crust pizza.

Visitors to Raffles City Changning can take a veritable 48 32970 48 15808 0 0 2023 0 0:00:16 0:00:07 0:00:09 2858 food tour around China with cuisine from across the country: the Old-Shanghai themed Rose Restaurant emulates the tastes of that era with its interior design and dim sum menu. Popular Cantonese restaurant Yu Ba Xian offers dishes like shark’s fins soup dumplings and fresh prawn sausages, served amidst dark wood furniture with intricate engravings. Paradise Dynasty gets creative with xiaolongbao, with their signature unique flavors and even a French macaroon inspired concept.

Shanghai’s first Hui cuisine restaurant, Wan Hui, will serve tofu-based dishes and Hui delicacies like skunk chopsticks (a fish dish) under a Ming dynasty-style rooftop, while Paradise Classic serves Nanyang cuisine, like the fish rice pin noodles claypot, with noodles made from glutinous rice floor, potato flour and pumpkin flour. For healthy hotpot, there’s Beijing’s Coucou Hotpot, with artfully cut ingredients and light and fresh soup bases.

Yezi Bu Yu brings Hainan flavor to Raffles City Changning, with coconut based Indonesian style hot pot which, of course, includes Hainan chicken.

For Yunnan cuisine, Yun Hai Yao serves up traditional sweet, spicy, and sour classics. And for meat lovers, Beijing Yanhe Yayuan Roast Duck Square not only serves its simple and modern roast duck, but also offers a variety of must-tries like lion’s head, yellow fish belly and even Sichuan flavored Australian ribs.

For Japanese cuisine, there’s the bamboo sheathed and high-end Ginkgo restaurant, sister to Julu Road’s Meiji Kyoto, located at the open-air plaza. For mid-range, there’s the ever-famous Maki House, where the sushi and maki risotto are so popular you have to eat within less than an hour to keep the line outside moving.

If you're looking for Asian cuisine with a modern take, there’s Firsthai Space, a fusion restaurant that focuses mainly on Southeast Asian dishes.

Shopping

Shopping options include INXX, worn by the likes of celebrities TFBoys and Han Geng, trendy street and hip-hop styles of StayReal, by Bu Er Liang and Mayday lead singer, Ashin, and a book shop and lifestyle hub, Yan Ji You where shoppers can find international titles along with a stationary of the traditional and digital varieties.

There’s also a host of international brands like Forever21, H&M, Nike, and the upscale Japanese wedding ring store I PRIMO (shoppers should note they can also get married at the Raffles City Changning renovated clock-tower).

With so many options and a unique blend of historical architecture and new development, it’s safe to say that Raffles City Changning will become a new go-to spot for Shanghai’s foodies and shoppers.
