6 Vets Every Pet Owner Should Know About

2018-04-08 Anu ShanghaiWOWeng

Shanghai has no dearth of pet hospitals. With so many options that cater to locals and expats across a wide price-and-service range, it can be overwhelming to make sense of which one would suit your pet (and your wallet) while being reliable and conveniently located. Additionally, every penny saved in unnecessary vet bills goes towards that extra tasty treat for your furry best friend.

We chatted with a few seriously loving pet owners to bring you our top six recommendations for vet clinics in the city. These have been carefully selected to ensure the best attention your pet can get, without compromising on service or quality.

1. Doctors Beck & Stone

This international pet clinic is surprisingly affordable for the quality of services they offer. They are foreign-run, with English-speaking, internationally-trained Chinese doctors who are all very experienced and great with animals. They are ideal for dogs and cats but also cater to small animals (rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, hamsters). Make an appointment before visiting as they tend to be booked out most days of the week. With multiple locations, they offer pet taxi, pet boarding, emergency services, and more.

2. Ai-Bi Pet Hospital

This hospital is like the Parkway for pets. They are niether pricey nor cheap, and are definitley worth visiting as they are methodical, very process-oriented, and fast. Language may be an issue, but the staff really go that extra mile for foreign pet owners. They are open 24/7 and located right across from Jade Buddha Temple.

Address: 1177 Shaanxi North Road, Jing'an

3. St Anthony’s Animal Recovery Hospital

This is a well-known and highly-recommended hospital with doctors from Germany, Singapore and Australia. The service is excellent and the nurses are very gentle with the animals. If your pet is seen by Dr. Stephanie Goltz, you can rest assured it's in the best hands possible. They are quite advanced and are well equipped to handle the most complex of surgeries. Very affordable. Must make an appointment for a visit.

4. Dog and Cat

Full-service clinic for pretty much all kinds of animals (despite the name). They have a pet store as well which is more comprehensive than other clinics who offer basic treats and kibble. The great thing is that they also have a grooming center and are open 24/7.

Address: 377 Weihai Lu, Jing’an District

5. Bon Bon

With a high number of friendly, English-speaking staff, this clinic has become a favorite among cat owners in Shanghai. The vets here are specialized in cat treatment, and are generally well-versed when it comes to animal behavior. They offer realiable services including cat-boarding, and are reasonably priced.

Address: 526 Fahuazhen Lu, near Dingxi Lu, Changning District

6. Shenpu Pet Hospital

Despite being known by possibly every pet owner in the city, Shenpu – a designated government clinic - cannot be left out of this list. It’s certified to provide all kinds of pet paperwork, including dog licenses and dog passports, in order to get your dog registered with the police. They are also the main clinic for rabies shots that is recognized by the government. This is a large and affordable hospital with bilingual staff. The nurses and doctors are Chinese, and well experienced to take great care of your pet.
