Register Your Own Weibo Account (it's Easy!)

2018-04-08 Josh ShanghaiWOWeng

Weibo is one of China’s largest social media platforms and an incredibly valuable tool for companies, working professionals, and creative alike. The Twitter-esque platform allows users to post short excerpts, videos, photos, and articles relating to their interests and industry. Utilizing an @ and # system similar to that of Twitter, Instagram, or many other western platforms, Weibo holds a strong position in the digital marketing world here in China. Whether you’re considering an account for yourself your brand, or your company, chances are it’s a good idea. Without further ado, here’s how to register your account.

Step One: Visit Weibo.com

Once you head to Weibo.com or download from the app store, you’ll find yourself at the home screen for your location. Weibo’s home screen, and uses, do differ between region. Meaning, if you’re outside of China make sure to manually turn off location services for your browser or head to the Chinese version to ensure you end up in the right place. Once that’s all figured out, you want to click on 注册 in the upper right.

Step Two: Register Your Phone # and Password

The next step simply asks you to input your Chinese phone number and select the password you want to use for your brand new Weibo account. Remember to make the password something you can remember to avoid further Weibo bureaucracy.

Step Three: Verify Your Phone #

China loves to verify phone numbers. Here, simply select your location, plug in your phone number and they will send you a code you’ll need to input to prove it’s your number. You’re almost there!

Step Four: Confirm Your Location

It’s imperative that you select China as your location, otherwise you’ll essentially end up on a separate platform from the other hundreds of millions of users. To avoid this issue, select 中国 (China) and you’ll be in the clear.

Step Five: Demographics

Next, you'll need to fill in basic information about your account, including your display or username, birthday, gender, and location to help make your account look more legitimate.

You’ll know you’ve completed this section correctly when you see the green 完成 sign with a checkmark to indicate your success. Once you see all four marks you are free to move on to the next step. You got this!

Step Six: Confirm Interests

You now will have to choose “interest” so Weibo can curate a feed to your liking. This option is mandatory, for some reason, but best to just pick at random or whatever looks the coolest for you. Either way, select a few and click the big button at the bottom.

Bonus: Translate Webpage

On the desktop version of the platform, you can actually select the language in the bottom right hand corner of the page. Rest assured, this translation will be far from perfect, and won’t apply to posts or content written in Chinese (or any other language), meaning that it’s functionality is limited at best, but it may help perusing the settings and account information at the start. Enjoy!
