Our Favorite Underrated Places to Eat in Shanghai

2018-04-11 Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng

There are undoubtedly countless amazing restaurants in Shanghai, with new places springing up every day. There are, however, more than a few places out there that deserve a hell of a lot more recognition than they receive. A few of our editors and contributors dished on a couple of their favorite underrated or underappreciated spots around the city.

Dr. Wine, for the cheese board

Address: 177 Fumin Lu

Tel: 021 5403 5717

Opening times: Daily, 10am-2am

The cheese board at Dr. Wine is AMAZING. It’s made up of a selection of high-quality French cheeses, and is by far my favorite thing; I have yet to find it rivaled. I also love the atmosphere and their wine selection, which is reasonably priced. It might not be a hidden gem, but I think it's a solid spot that seriously deserves a shout-out.

Azul, for their brunch

Address: 8/F Wukangting, 378 Wukang Lu

Tel: 021 5405 2252

Opening times: Daily, 11am-11pm

I feel like this is a bit of a ‘basic bitch’ choice. Evvveryone who has lived in Shanghai for more than two minutes knows about Azul and their amazing brunch deal. (RMB 188 for 3 courses, a coffee and an alcoholic drink). It’s my go-to place when I want to hang out on a Saturday morning (2pm) with my girlfriends and gossip over good food.

In my opinion, mid-spring is the prime time to go and maximize their terrace. My go-to order is their ceviche, which I haven’t found rivaled anywhere in the city, followed by their baked salmon and quinoa main which is light, healthy, and absolutely delicious.

I try to shake it up when it comes to desserts and try a different one every time. Oh, and I forgot to mention: their Bloody Marys pack one hell of a punch.

Waipo Jia (Grandma’s Home)

Address: Multiple stores

Opening times: Daily, 10am-2pm, 4:30pm-9pm

When I’m craving some legit, well-prepared, yet cheap Chinese food that isn’t smothered in oil and MSG, Waipo Jia is my go-to spot. As a Hangzhou chain restaurant, this down-to-earth eatery has been bringing in the local crowds in droves for years, yet most foreigners haven’t caught on yet. My favorite location is on Changshou Lu near Shaanxi Lu; with an open layout, dark wooden tables, and dim, elegant lighting, I can feel like I’m out for a nice dinner, but leave paying less than RMB 75 a person.

It’s the perfect spot to go with a big group, since the portions match that of a Thanksgiving dinner (and, similar to Thanksgiving, I usually need to loosen my belt buckle halfway through the meal due to my lack of self-restraint around delicious food.) I always go for the Claypot Chicken (RMB 48), the Tofu Skin Wraps (RMB 12) and the Sweet Red Dates (RMB 8), but with over a hundred dishes to choose from, there’s something for everyone.

The Shed, for Wednesday Wing Night

Address: 698 Shanxi Bei Lu

Tel: 021 6237 6381

Opening times: Daily, 8am-2am

Every Western restaurant in Shanghai seems to have a burger deal, a wings night, or a taco Tuesday event. While some really are great deals, others are just an excuse for a meal out. However, when it comes to wings at The Shed (RMB 2 per wing), I actively try not to cook on Wednesdays so I can stop over.

Unlike most places, The Shed grills their wings instead of frying them, so I don’t feel terrible after eating a few too many. Instead of a lot of fatty skin, the wings served are mostly meaty and tender drumettes, sprinkled with loads of cumin and spices. The Shed’s hot sauce is similar to Frank’s Red Hot, one of my guilty pleasures, so I prefer to drown my wings before feasting. I stop for a breather, sauce dripping off my fingers and smeared across my smiling face, before calling the waitress over to order another 10.

Bella Napoli

Address: 4, 946 Changle Lu, near Wulumuqi Zhong Lu

Tel: 021 6248 8985

Opening times: Daily, 11:30am-3pm; 5pm-11pm

Tons of people know about Bella Napoli, so I'm not suggesting it's some sort of secret spot. But when was the last time you heard about them? If I have to choose a place that is ‘underrated,’ they’re one of the first that come to mind as I almost never see any advertising, PR or event listings from them. But despite their general lack of buzz, they have incredible food and service every time I go. It deserves a lot more hype than it receives (especially their pizza!!!).

Skandina, for their ele.me

Address: 5/F Citic Square,1168 Nanjing Xi Lu

Tel: 021 5298 7927

Opening times: Sat & Sun, 10am-10pm; Mon to Fri, 8am-10pm

Nordic fast casual food is somehow my favorite thing to order on ele.me. It’s a gift from the gods, and if anything is deserving of this white-hot spotlight, I vote Skandina.

PHÉNIX

Address: 2/F The Puli Hotel, 1 Changde Lu

Tel: 021 2216 6988

Opening times: Sun, 6:30am-10:30am, 11:30am-2:30pm, 2:30pm-5:30pm, 6pm-10pm; Mon-Sat 6:30am-10:30am,12pm-2:30pm, 2:30pm-5:30pm, 6pm-10pm

This is a 1-Michelin star restaurant in a beautiful luxury hotel, yet I rarely hear about it! Food is lovely - the duck neck sausage is a sight to see, but also has the flavor to back it up. I recently had an amazing langoustine dish there, too. Chef is a nice guy, and service is spot-on. OMG AND THE BUTTER! Be still, my cholesterol-laden heart! The bread and butter alone is reason enough to go.

Miss Ali

Address: 2/F, 20 Yuyuan Dong Lu

Tel: 021 6335 5016

Opening times: Daily, 11am-2pm, 5pm-10pm

Really good Xinjiang food! The location is perhaps a bit odd (on the 2nd floor of a building on Yuyuan Lu) but fairly convenient in Jing'an. The interior is suitable for large groups, and they also have private rooms.

I come here for the giant lamb skewers, but I also love the fish, ding ding mian, and their yogurt. Prices are affordable. I love to bring visitors here for a taste of "Chinese food" that is different from what they are used to.
