Finally! An All-Day-Every-Day Brunch at Kru

2018-04-14 Sophie Steiner ShanghaiWOWeng

I like brunch, I like brinner (“breakfast for dinner” for all you that have been missing out on the best meal of the day for your whole lives), and I like pretty much everything that exists in this world that is breakfast-related. While Shanghai has definitely caught on to the brunch trend in the past few years, most places only offer it on Saturdays and Sundays during a few set hours. Well what about those people that want it during the other 160 hours in a week? Luckily, Kru has got us covered for those brunch-necessary times that don’t align with everyone else’s schedule.

Located near the Hengshan Lu entrance to the ever-growingly popular Yong Ping Lane, Kru offers all-day-every-day brunch. Yes, you just heard that correctly, you can enjoy everything from eggs benedict to quiches to French toast no matter the time of day or day of the week.

To add to that, Kru also boasts an excellent patio in a beautiful courtyard space with loads of sunshine, flowers, and trees providing shade. Sip on one of their numerous wine cocktails or, my personal favorite, their Hendrick’s Gin & Tonic (RMB 78), and enjoy some upper echelon people watching.

As a wine bar, Kru’s menu features over 50 different varieties of reds and whites from around the world, providing endless options for brunch pairings. For the heavier drinkers, Kru also offers 12 different wine-based cocktails that taste even better than they look.

Kru’s brunch menu covers all of the best breakfast dishes and then some. The Salmon Scrambled Eggs (RMB 88) is garnished with a generous serving of fresh, popping roe and served with toasted rye and crispy bacon. To kick it up a notch, Kru makes a homemade roasted garlic infused butter that I could eat by the spoonful.

On the lighter side, the Squid Salad (RMB 68) is easily enough for two people and comes loaded with big pieces of squid, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, crunchy sliced radishes, and creamy aioli dressing.

If I’m in the mood for pizza, the Bread Bomb (RMB 78) lives up to its name by being an explosion of spicy salami, heaps of cheese, in-house made tomato sauce, and mushrooms. Pick any accompanying vegetable side you’re in the mood for, from mixed grilled vegetables or creamed corn, to grilled broccoli or fried potatoes.

After a night of heavy drinking, there’s nothing more comforting than the classic American Breakfast (RMB 98). No hangover can stand up to this mother load of delicious calories that comes in the form of two fried eggs, bacon, German imported sausage, toast, fried potatoes, and a side salad. Add in a highly caffeinated latte, and I just might be ready to muster the energy to go out again tonight!

Every restaurant in town has their version of avocado toast, but at Kru, the Avocado Toast (RMB 88) is a step above the rest. With a perfectly cooked egg and sundried tomatoes on top balanced on crispy toast baked with raisins and almonds for an extra layer of flavor, this is one avocado toast you won’t forget.

Splurge on the 350-gram serving of M6 Roasted Ribeye (RMB 468) or opt for a sweet treat with the Blueberry & Chocolate Waffle (RMB 78) that comes with a side of homemade vanilla bean ice cream. Can’t decide? Follow my lead by spending the entire day there feasting on both!
