Our 10 Favorite Convenient Store Snacks

2018-04-16 Ryan ShanghaiWOWeng

Looking for a convenient store snack can be daunting. There’s a lot to choose from, and between the occasional lost-in-translation names/descriptions, weird packaging, and the vastness of options, you may find yourself sad and confused. Don’t be. Here are ten perfect options.

1. Huang Fei Hong Spicy Peanuts

Price: RMB 6.80

What is it: Peanuts with Sichuan peppers and mala.

Why we love it: The mix of spice and peanuts, irresistible.

2. Dried Seaweed Snack

Price: RMB 16.80 (8 pks)

What is it: Impossibly thin squares of dried seaweed.

Why we love it: It’s a little bit funky, but the salty, ocean-y flavor is refreshing and never filling, even if you eat, like, 20 bags of it.

3. Prawn Crackers

Price: RMB 11

What is it: Shrimp flavored chip things.

Why we love it: Prawn crackers fall right in the Goldilocks zone of excitingly strange, without being too weird to eat.

4. Tea Eggs

Price: RMB 2

What is it: Eggs hard-boiled in tea for 10000000 hours (just a guess)

Why we love it: Perfect for lazy people who don’t want to think about how/what/when to eat.

5. Sushi Triangles

Price: RMB 3.30

What is it: Rice triangles wrapped in seaweed with various fillings, often fish.

Why we love it: Convenient stores and sushi are not, at first blush, a great pairing. But these triangles make such an easy, convenient semi-meal on-the-go that it’s hard to avoid them.

6. Pocky

Price: RMB 6.80

What is it: Heavenly sticks of biscuit-like material dipped into various sugary goo.

Why we love it: BECAUSE IT’S POCKY, DUH.

7. Cut apples (Family Mart)

Price: RMB 4.30

What is it: Perfectly-sliced apples in a little plastic bag.

Why we love it: Because everyone loves apples but no one wants to bite into an actual full apple.

8. Ice Cream

Price: RMB 3-16

What is it: Dairy? Chocolate? Delicious synthetic goo? We’re too scared to ask.

Why we love it: Because… ice cream.

9. Bonumee Gummi Sour Hearts

Price: RMB 11.90

What is it: Sugar and ground-up horse hooves (probably)

Why we love it: Unbearably sweet, in the best possible way.

10. Asahi

Price: RMB 9

What is it: Beer.

Why we love it: Ok, it’s not a snack. You got us. But hey, skip a snack and just walk around drinking a beer. Why not. It’s pretty filling and will probably improve your mood a lot more than a bag of peanuts would.
