Address: No. 10 Shajing Lu, near Jiulong Lu

Built in 1933 by Chinese developers, the site was originally intended for use as a slaughterhouse but served a number of purposes over the years from medicine factory, cold storage facility, to its current incarnation as a ‘commercial hub for creative industries’. Definitely one of our top picks for most interesting construction in Shanghai, this is a surefire way to manipulate lighting and angles for an artistic photoshoot.

3. Tianzifang

Address: 210 Taikang Lu

Much like 1933, Tianzifang has transformed itself from historical residential architectures (Shikumen or stone-framed houses) into a very trendy (albeit touristy) area with ample bars, cafes, galleries, boutiques, and studios. Locals, hipsters, and tourists alike flock here to explore the novelties that bury themselves in the lanes of Tianzifang.
