Mercedes Opens Enormous 'Experience Store' in Shanghai

2018-04-18 ShanghaiWOWeng

Fans of Mercedes have something to be excited about, the brand recently opened an enormous 'experience store' inside the Bund Finance Center. So what does that mean? Well for starters, you should know that you can't actually buy a car here (although employees are able to help arrange a test drive for you at other locations). The 1,000sqm space is packed with Mercedes merch, a couple of restaurants and a whole lot more.

Following in the footsteps of Sanlitun in Beijing, this is actually China’s second Mercedes Me and the 7th in the world. Visitors can enjoy all things Mercedes-related, along with coffee, food and drinks at two restaurants inside the venue.

The Sanlitun Mercedes Me in Beijing is a 2-story, 2,400sqm space, making it the largest Mercedes Me experience shop in the world.

The experience store was designed by Prof.H. G. Merz, a German architect who also famously designed the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Nicholas Speeks, President and CEO of Beijing-based Mercedes-Benz Sales Service Co. Ltd., hosted the opening ceremony and welcomed every guest to the lounge on the first floor. The event was attended by celebrities such as famous F1 Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, the professional tennis player Li Na, Lincoln Park member Mike Shinoda, and Chinese singer Li Quan.

Like we said, the store has a whole lot going on besides cars. Their restaurants and exhibition areas are top-of-the-line and built to stun.

The Western restaurant, M.E., is located on the first floor and has an elegant, minimalist style. The chef has worked in Shangri-La hotels and restaurants around the world, boasting over 25 years of experience cooking amazing cuisine.

And of course you don't have to actually own a Mercedes to carry the swag: wallets, mobile phone cases, and other goods are available for purchase throughout the store.

On the second floor you can find popular Beijing restaurant Sifangsanchuan. It uses a combination of Cantonese cooking techniques and ingredients from Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Chongqing provinces.

In each of the private dining rooms you can even find decorative Mercedes-Benz paintings.

There's also a bar, which is a smaller version of Beijing’s Lighthouse Bar. Every cocktail is Mercedes-Benz-themed in name and concept.

Last but not least, visitors who want to wrap up the entire experience can book a test drive on the first floor. The three available test drive routes have been carefully mapped out. One is the North Bund line, which allows you to speed past 100 years of the Bund. The second is the Yuejiang Line, which allows you to cross from Pudong to Puxi via Nanpu Bridge. The third and final line is the Xintiandi Line, which passes through Shikumen lane houses.

The test drive isn’t just a chance to experience how the car performs, but a way to feel the best you can through the carefully selected music and fragrance diffused into the car.

It has been rumoured that Mercedes-Benz is in the works of opening their third Chinese Mercedes Me experience store in Chengdu and hope to expand to more Chinese cities such as Hangzhou and Shenzhen.

Mercedes Me experience stores around the world

Store in Hamburg, Germany (temporarily closed)

The world’s first Mercedes Me is located in Hamburg, Germany. It’s a multi-functional space with exhibition areas, a lounge and a restaurant.

The restaurant is called Kofler & Kompanie. The name might sound familiar because it has become an incredibly successful catering brand in Hamburg over the last two decades.

Store in Milan, Italy

The world’s second Mercedes Me store is located in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, Italy.

Store in Haneda Airport, Tokyo, Japan

The world’s third (and Asia’s first) Mercedes Me store is located in the Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan.

Eggcellent Bites is one of two restaurants available in the store. Here visitors are offered a range of light meals and desserts, including some “Mercedes Me Tokyo HANEDA” and even Mercedes-Benz egg tarts.

The other dining option is a popular one for foreigners: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.

Store in Melbourne, Australia

Last year another Mercedes Me experience store opened in Melbourne, Australia.

Store in Hong Kong

The Mercedes Me store in Hong Kong only covers an area of 400sqm and is designed to be simple and elegant. It offers many different functions such as fashion shows, Formula 1 live broadcasting, exhibitions and concerts.

Edgar Sanuy (Chef of the Year 2013) runs the restaurant at this site. He carefully designed the menu with a combination of raw seafood and cooked meat dishes in order to create an exotic Asian cuisine.
