5 Sizzling Hot Spots for Korean BBQ

2018-04-19 Sophie Steiner ShanghaiWOWeng

Korean BBQ is just as much about the food as it is about the social experience. A table full of marinated, grilled meats and loads of banchan, or side dishes, is accompanied by great conversations with friends, flirting couples on dates, and rowdy groups getting ready for a night out.

Korean BBQ’s secret to success is the full-on tabletop experience of grilling your own meats, which involves a massive spread of steak, ribs, and pork belly, to name a few, as well as banchan dishes ranging from kimchi to pickled veggies, stir-fried zucchini to seasoned bean sprouts, seafood egg pancakes to pickled daikon, and sautéed eggplants smothered in sauce mung bean jelly; you’ll be loosening your belt buckle and reaching for another bottle of soju in no time.

Here’s where to find some of our favorite Korean BBQ joints in Shanghai:

BC2333

Address: 2/F, Shenzhou Commercial Building, 83 Changshu Lu

Tel: 021 6126 3713

Hours: Monday-Friday, 10:30am-3pm, 5:30pm-10pm, Saturday-Sunday 10am-3pm, 5:30pm-3am

For homey Korean food in Jing’an, stop by BC2333. This restaurant offers everything from Korean BBQ meat options like Woo Samgyeop, beef marinated in traditional Korean seasonings (RMB 88 for 200 grams) to hearty stone bowls of Bibimbap (RMB 48).

If you have a big group, which is always more fun when going out for Korean BBQ, BC2333 also offers unlimited meat options that range in price based on the number of people in your party and the quality and cuts of meat you want included. The standard price that can feed up to eight people is a steal at RMB 288, including drinks! The restaurant provides a variety of delicious banchan options, and the Dwoenjang Chiggae is not to be missed!

Park Korean Food and Beer

Address: 425 Shaanxi Bei Lu

Hours: Monday-Thursday 11:30am-2pm, 5:30-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11:30am-2pm, 5pm-11pm, Sunday 11:30am-2pm, 5pm-10pm

For grilled pork belly and pajeon seafood pancakes, I satisfy my Korean food craving close to home at Park Korean Food and Beer. Located between The Rooster and Sumerian on Shaanxi Lu, this quirky restaurant decorated with superheroes is convenient for a quick pop in any time of the week! Their RMB 48 lunch sets on weekdays are good for your wallet and include a variety of mains and side options. The only downside is that their banchan options are lacking, with just a potato salad, kimchi, and spring onions.

For an alternative to Korean BBQ, their Korean Fried Chicken (RMB 90 for a whole serving or RM 48 for half) is always crispy and comes doused in finger-licking good sweet (but not all that spicy) sauce. Go early on weekends to avoid waiting for a table!

Gude Gude

Address: 16-1, 600 Guoding Lu

Tel: 021 5578 9707

Hours: Daily, 11:30am-3:30pm, 4:30pm-10pm

For an action-packed, friendly Korean BBQ option, Gude Gude has got you covered. While the decor is not this restaurant's strong suit, the food quality makes up for it. The insanely wide variety of meats are all very reasonably priced, with options like Pork Neck (RMB 48) and, for the more adventurous, Seasoned Beef Tongue (RMB 53). The Spicy Fried Rice Cakes (RMB 30) taste exactly like the tteokbokki I had in Seoul with that tangy sauce and perfectly chewy texture. Don't forget an order of the Seaweed Rice Balls (RMB 25) that remind me of sushi and go perfectly with the roasted meats.

The meat is very reasonably priced, with options like Rib Chop Beef (RMB 68) and, for the more adventurous, Beef Tongue (RMB 58). With set menu options ranging in price from RMB 208 to RMB 588, it’s the best choice for a group of any size.

Ben Jia

Address: 1339 Wuzhong Road

Tel: 021 5118 2777

Hours: Monday-Friday 11am-2pm, 5pm-10pm, Saturday-Sunday 11am-10pm

Recommended to me by Koreans craving actual Korean food, I knew Ben Jia had to be good, but it far surpassed expectations. For a moment, I actually thought I was in Seoul, traipsing through Insadong, rather than on a main street in Shanghai. For tender, high-quality meats, a wide selection of veggies (for all those vegetarians out there), and the yummiest Seafood Pancakes (RMB 50), this is the place you want to check out in Koreatown.

The Premium Beef (RMB 158) is a generous portion of perfectly marbled beef that is borderline steak quality, and the Bibimbap (RMB 35) is worth ordering at least two. The only downside is that BenJia doesn’t take reservations, and, because of it’s increasing popularity, it’s worth going early!

Seorae

Address: Room 218-220, 2/F, In Point, 169 Wujiang Lu

Tel: 021 5285 0236

Hours: Monday-Saturday 11:30am-1am, Sunday 11:30am-11pm

When you’ve got a big group that wants to eat too much food, drink too much booze, and get a bit wild, Seorae fits the bill. Since this restaurant opened in 2016, the quality of the meat hasn’t changed (and maybe it’s even improved!), but what brings us back every time is the makgeolli. Makgeoilli is a slightly sweet alcoholic (6-8% ABV) beverage native to Korea. It’s made from rice or wheat and is fermented, which gives this milky, off-white colored liquid a bit of carbonation. There are few places outside of Korea that sell it, so when I find a place I can enjoy it along with BBQ’d meats, I’m a happy camper.

The Seasoned Beef Ribs (RMB 58) are tender, delicious morsels, and the Pork Belly (RMB 40) has the optimal balance of fat and meat so that the fat melts perfectly, coating the rest of the grilled meats with extra flavor. An order of the Kimchi Pancakes (RMB 35) is never a bad choice, but don’t forget about the wide variety of pickled veggies, sprouts, kimchi vegetables, and sauces that come for free with any ordered meal!
