13 Authentic Shanghainese Food Gems

2018-04-20 ShanghaiWOWeng

It’s safe to say that in a city as large as Shanghai, restaurants are not hard to come by. That, however, may not always be a good thing: the more options we tend to have, the harder it can be to choose one. But if you pay close enough attention, you will find that some of the most authentic and delicious places to eat are often the most overlooked.

They may not be at the most convenient locations and may have irregular working hours, but the food served makes it all worthwhile, so we took it upon ourselves to scout around the streets of Shanghai and found 13 well-hidden restaurants that prove to be well worth a visit.

Haiqiang Noodle Restaurant

Address: Room 103, No. 3, 100 Yun Guang Road

Tel: 021 – 65541067

Hours: Mon-Sat, 11am – 8pm

Despite the city’s massive transformation over the past two decades, this restaurant - named after its owner - has managed to remain in operation for 15 years. Known for its red braised sauce with noodles served in traditional Shanghainese bowls, Haiqiang is a favorite among Fudan University students due to its proximity and mouth-watering dishes, thus earning the nickname “mini Fudan canteen”.

Old Place Restaurant

Address: 233 Xiang Yang Nan Road

Tel: 021 – 64710556

Hours: Mon-Sun, 6:30am-7pm

Located on South Xiangyang Road near Yongkang Road, this tiny gem attracts long queues on a regular basis despite only offering three tables for diners to share. Their signature dish is the bowl of scallion noodles, packed with savory flavors.

Longtang Snack

Address: 764 Chang Le Road

Tel: 021 – 54039700

Hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-8pm

Unlike other restaurants on our list, Longtang Snack has only been around for no more than four years, yet their quality and affordable prices have already attracted their own crowd of loyal customers. The restaurant even has an outdoor stove as a reminder of the old days when such equipment was a common sight on the streets of Shanghai, which gives it a local neighbor kind of feel.

Although they originally began by offering classic Shanghainese delights like lobster slices, fried pork cutlets and borscht soup, Longtang Snack just has been adding more items to diversify its menu. Their fried pork cutlets and large wontons are sold at an affordable RMB 10.

A Lin Wonton

Address: 172 Yanchang Road

Tel: 18221473867

Hours: Mon-Sun, 6am-7pm

Known for its originality and uncommon servings, A Lin Wonton offers a variety of interesting dishes such as their popular claypot wontons, filled with copious amounts of pork lard, zha cai, seaweed, parsley and green onions - a guaranteed trip down memory lane for many local Shanghainese.

Despite their large size, the wontons are sold at a very affordable RMB 10, all within a clean and tidy dining space.

Damao Characteristic Noodle Restaurant

Address: Opposite of 182 Chang Chun Road

Hours: Mon-Sunday, 5:30am-12:30pm

Damao has been a neighborhood favorite among retired uncles looking for a place to eat and chit chat for more than 10 years, and offer 17 varieties of noodle flavors for no more than RMB 15. They are only open five hours a day though, so come on down early to claim your seat and mingle with local customers.

Sheng Xing Dim Sum

Address: 528 Shun Chang Road

Tel: 021 – 53067325

Hours: Mon-Sun, 6am-5pm

Around since the 90’s, Sheng Xing is often frequented by both older generation customers and white collar professionals working nearby.

Their family fortune noodles are a must-have, with five vegetable and meat wontons and two tang yuan - one filled with sesame sauce, and the other with pork. Expect to exchange close eye contact with other customers as they only offer 4-5 tables.

Yong Xing Noodle House

Address: 448 – 454 Guangxi Bei Road

Tel: 13632890385

Hours: Mon-Sun, 8am-7:30pm

Once you get past the luxurious jewelry stores and other famed shopping centers on Nanjing Road, you may easily find yourself disoriented by the much more local scenery that North Guangxi Road offers.

Overlooked by many, this street is home to some of the best Shanghainese restaurants in the city, including Yong Xing Noodle House. This restaurant is best reputed for their spicy meat noodles, all of which are served with a fresh and sweet both.

Jin Biao Fried Dumpling King

Address: 336 Zhapu Road

Tel: 13774239725

Hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-8pm

Jin Biao is certainly accustomed to changing locations, having moved twice prior to settling on Zhapu Road. Yet despite their relocation, the restaurant’s reputation for serving delicious, high-quality dumplings has remained intact, and continues to sell well over 40 batches of dumplings daily. Their fried dumplings are cooked to golden brown perfection and come with thin skin and a crispy base.

Floating Fats Noodle House

Address: 288 Kunming Road

Tel: 15902191036

Hours: Mon-Sat, 11am-2pm, 5pm-7pm

Hidden away on Kunming Road stands Floating Fats Noodle House, a noodle shop so popular that it had no choice but to extend its operating hours from afternoons only to a more accepted daily schedule.

The restaurant offers more than 20 different types of noodles, all of which are sold at a flat rate.

Gu Sha Noodle Store

Address: 155 Hui Wen Road

Tel: 18017058829

Hours: 12pm until sold out

Originally opened by a loving couple, Gu Sha Noodle has accumulated a myriad of loyal fans despite its unpopular location and only one table at their disposal. The shop is quite generous with their condiments, and is best known for their mixed noodles.

We highly recommend you hurry down there early as the restaurant often closes as soon as they sell out.

Wei Min Restaurant

Address: 62 Hui Min Road

Hours: Mon-Sun, 7am-12:30pm

This restaurant’s pot stickers and beef soup have become unmatched favorites among customers in all their years of operation. Pot stickers are packed with flavors and best appreciated when consumed hot, while their beef soup comes in smaller sizes but still gives you more bang for your buck at only RMB 3 per bowl.

San Lin Tang Wonton

Address: 416 Jiang Xi Zhong Road

Tel: 021 – 63224827

Hours: Mon-Sun, 6:30am-6pm

Despite bearing the name of a neighborhood from Pudong due to its original owner’s roots, this wonton shop has been operating on the western side of the Huangpu river for more than 30 years.

Be prepared for a hefty meal, as some of their wontons are larger than the average fist! Each serving comes with eight wontons bathed in a pork lard-filled broth.

Shikumen Beef Steak Noodle

Address: No. 5, 21 Hui Min Road

Tel: 021 – 65356223

Hours: Mon-Sunday, 11am-2pm

Established seven years ago, this restaurant bears testament to the dedication of a loving father. In an attempt to spend more time with his son, owner Chef Fang quit his previous office job to open Shikumen. The shop only operates in the afternoon so it does not conflict with his son’s schooling.

The restaurant offers four tables and is best know for their signature beef steak noodles, each of which sells for only RMB 26 and comes with a large sized steak, a rich broth, and springy noodles.
