How to Eat Like a Brit in Shanghai

Sammy Bowen, Entrepreneur

From Essex (which is really London)*

*Editor’s note: No it isn’t.

What’s your favourite breakfast spot?

McDonald’s. As a man on the run I don’t have time for breakfast, but I want something quick and healthy and two double egg McMuffins cover that as I’m getting my protein and one of my five a day*. Little tip: give the bird behind the counter a wink and she will throw in a hash brown on the house, if it’s a man then don’t.

*Editor’s note: No you’re not.

Where do you go for dinner?

Lawsons is where all the serious business men hang out after work* and high five each other, talking about how much we deadlift and calling each other "brah" (none of us actually like each other, but there are no other options) if you catch me in the chiller section, your next beer is on me.

*Editor’s note: No it isn’t.

What’s your favorite British dish?

Britain’s number one dish… anything Indian*. I head to Masala Art. I’m such a regular that the man shakes my hand when I arrive.

Address: Masala Art, 397 Dagu Lu

Tel: 6327 3571

*Editor’s note: This actually is true.

What’s your favorite breakfast spot?

Obviously I am going to be biased on this one and say I make my own using Breakfast Champion products, good quality British style bacon, sausages and black pudding to create a simple British fry up and set me up for the day.

WeChat: BreakfastChampion

What’s your favorite meal?

The U.Ks number one dish wins for me, Chicken Tikka Masala with Garlic Naan, Chips and Rice, when I first arrived in China my luck was in when my roommate turned out to be an Indian Chef, being a chef myself I ceased my opportunity to learn a range of decent curries, Tikka Masala has become my party trick dish ever since!

What’s your favorite dinner spot?

I love fish and chips, and Hooked is probably the only place that does it right in this city. That would be my Friday dinner spot a couple of times a month at least.

Address: Hooked, 158 Julu Lu

Tel: 6333 2198

What food/drink do you miss the most from home?

It’s a very long list, Tayto crisps (all flavors), Belfast Pastie Baps, Potato and Soda Farls, Brown Lemonade, Yellow Man, hands down the best spuds in the world, decent Red Ale, Harp Lager, Cookstown Sausages and quarters of boiled sweets to name a few. I find myself obsessed with food and drink every time I travel back home and fill my bag with all of the above before I leave.

It’s got to be a roast dinner! My favorite is probably beef. The best is homemade!

Pie Society or Bull & Claw. The lunch set menu at Bull & Claw is great value, and you just can’t beat one of Jane’s pies, especially if a little worse-for-wear.

A Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Preferably eaten at my mum’s dinner table, unfortunately not often enough. We make a pretty good attempt in our apartment here though.

What food/drink do you miss the most from home?

I would say Greggs, but we are doing everything we can to fix that! If not, a pint of real cask ale and a packet of Salt & Vinegar McCoys.

What’s your favorite breakfast spot?

My favorite breakfast spot is actually not a Brit related spot, it’s just close to my house and I can roll there on a hangover really easily (nation of binge drinkers well represented here). It’s Diner on Wulumuqi Lu. My favorite dish is their smoked salmon rosti which I could eat for days.

Address: Diner, 145 Wuyuan Lu

Tel: 6416 1678

What do you usually eat for Lunch?

It’s got to be a sausage roll from Butler & White’s. They’re absolutely spot on. That with a splash of HP brown sauce (from the Avo lady) and you’re golden.

WeChat: ButlerWhites

Address: Avocado Lady, 274 Wulumuqi Lu

Where do you shop for British style groceries?

I tend to cook at home lots. I get meat from Nicolson’s because I love the quality. I tend to get my veggies delivered from Goma Greens and then I top up at my local wet market. I grew up in the countryside so I’m used to authentic markets and it makes me feel at home.

Address: Nicolson’s, 92 Wuyuan Lu

What food/drink do you miss the most from home?

CRUMPETS. Dear baby Jesus PLEASE can someone start making crumpets. All I want on a Sunday night is BBC iPlayer and a crumpet smothered in butter. I would give my left elbow for a crumpet.

What’s your favorite dinner spot?

By The See – Xincun Lu*

Here is a great spot for dinner especially if you like seafood. There is a huge choice of all kinds of fish and shell fish. All alive and fresh. You walk around the tanks and choose what you want to eat. It’s then prepared for you in plain sight so you know what you’re getting is fresh and is what you chose. In addition they have a micro brewery and a programmable cooking device on each table that you use to cook your shell fish to perfection.

*Editor’s note: not Brit related at all, but whatever, us Brits are a diverse lot.

Where do you shop for British style groceries?

Carrefour, I used to shop in Tesco but found the quality just isn’t as good.

Address: B1-2/F, 1018 Changning Lu (multiple locations)

Is there a place in Shanghai that reminds you of home?

I still really haven’t found anywhere that really reminds of home however, as I like the pub culture in the UK, The Shed is somewhere I like to hang out.

Address: The Shed, 698 Shaanxi Bei Lu

Tel: 6237 6381

What food/drink do you miss the most from home?

To be fair, as Shanghai can provide most of the foods from back home, the only food I really missed were pies i.e. steak and kidney or chicken and mushroom. However with the opening of establishments like Pie Society I can now even get a good pie in Shanghai.

Address: Pie Society, Rm 102, Bldg 5, 67 Xingfu Lu

What’s your favorite breakfast spot?

RAC Coffee – It’s perfectly situated between my home and my son’s kindergarten so it’s where I go before or after picking him up (sometimes before AND after). It’s several notches above nearby Sunflower Bakery. They serve delicious galletes and crepes with high quality ingredients as well as other pastries, wines and of course, great coffee. My favorite is their breakfast bun which is fluffy scrambled eggs, chives, melted cheese, onion jam between a soft bun.

Address: RAC Coffee, 332 Anfu Lu

What’s your favorite meal and where do you eat it?

It’s hard to pick one meal, but I would say that a great curry is hard to beat. I love Indian food as most Brits do, and luckily there are some great choices in Shanghai. My favorite has to be Kebabs On The Grille – it won’t win any awards for ambiance, design or even service but none of that matters to me because the food is great – Chicken Tikka Masala, Aloo Gobi and some Dahl is all I need.

Address: Kebabs on the Grille, 227 Huangpi Bei Lu

Tel: 3315 0132

Is there a place in Shanghai that reminds you of home?

It used to be the coffee shop at M&S before they closed all their mainland China stores. So now I guess it’s Pret, which I love for their fresh sandwiches, pastries and that amazing tomato soup.

Address: Pret a Manger, 1515 Nanjing Xi Lu

Tel: 6132 0800

Wechat: PRET

What food/drink do you miss the most from home?

I miss Walker’s crisps (flavours here are just not the same) especially salt and vinegar and cheese and onion. Also, proper English style sausages are almost impossible to find here. But the thing I miss most is a proper greasy doner kebab which for some mysterious reason doesn’t exist here. So I always binge on these when I am back hoping I will be sick of them for a while after I get back to Shanghai.

What’s your favorite breakfast spot?

My house! I recently found a shop stocking some pretty awesome English muffins on occasion (ta, Casa Mart), so I’ve been cooking up a storm in the kitchen with those bad boys. Otherwise, it’s not usually a British-related spot. Most days, I’m likely to be sipping on a coffee and chowing down on a cheese-laden bagel at Sumerian.

Address: Sumerian, 415 Shanxi Bei Lu

Tel: 6475 5689

What’s your favorite dinner spot?

Pie Society for sure. Proper pies, authentic bangers and real mashed potatoes. What more could a girl ask for? Every time I go I feel like I’m back in a pub at home.

Address: Pie Society, Rm 102, Bldg 5, 67 Xingfu Lu

Tel: 136 7189 3024

I’ve pretty much just discovered Breakfast Champion, so that’s going to be my go-to from now on for some nice sausage and bacon action in the kitchen. Otherwise I usually trawl the import stores nearby to find treats from home. Most of the time these are snacks like Kit Kats, or jars of Branston Pickle – those are a real gem of a find.

What food/drink do you miss the most from home?

Gregg’s Chicken Bake. Whenever I fly back to the UK it’s the first thing I hone in on at Manchester Airport. Not my family waiting for me at arrivals. That crispy, golden, pastry delight. Every. Single. Time.  Oh and also anything with gravy. Roast dinners, cottage pie...you get the picture.
