5 Indoor Activities to Keep the Kids Busy

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-12-01

It’s spring! Yay! Time to go out and play! Or maybe not… With plum rain season looming and the recent heat wave, parents may need a few ‘Plan B’ tricks to keep everyone from going stir-crazy indoors. Here are a few options to entertain the little, medium, big and even biggest rug rats! (Let’s face it, daddies would love some of these too!).

1. Indoor Playgrounds and Trampoline Parks

Lollipop: 100 Zunyi Lu near Ziyun Lu. Opening Hours: 10am-9:30pm, Tel: 80105701. Admission: RMB100 on weekdays (1 kid + 1 adult), weekends are RMB 110.

Amazon Kingdom: 168 Shangnan Lu, near Guozhan Lu, Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 10am-9pm, Sat-Sun 10:30am-9pm, Tel: 15921039939, Admission: RMB 130 per person.

Jump 360 Minhang: 1480 Jidi Lu near Jizhan Lu, Opening Hours: Mon-Thurs 10am-9pm, Fri & Sat 10am-11pm, Sun 9am-9pm, Tel: 13166250458 (there is another branch in Baoshan).

These are always crowd pleasers, even if the sun is shining outdoors. If your kids just need an hour or two for entertainment, head over to Lollipop at The Place mall. Suitable for kids aged between 1 and 6, there is a role play area, a few slides that lead to ball zones, climbing areas and trampolines. If you need them out of your hair for longer, try the NBA Playzone, which suits a larger age range of about 3 to 12-years old with an indoor basketball court, toddler play area and digital games.

If climbing is their thing, Amazon Kingdom in various malls will give them a challenge as they strap on helmets and harnesses to channel their inner Tarzan. Little Bugz in Jing’an will tire the little ones out for their afternoon nap (suits kids aged 6 months to 4 years), and if you contact Siobhan Brown (Wechat ID: SiobhanBrown) from Shanghai Mamas, the first 30 families to register get free entrance on the last Tuesday of every month!

Everyone from young to old loves to jump around, but just make sure the littlies don’t get trampled by the big ones at these adrenaline parks! With two branches, Jump 360 is your go-to to let off everybody’s steam!

2. Museums and Aquariums

Yawn and double yawn says everybody? Well think again, as these are largely kid-friendly with moving dinosaurs and plenty of interactive activities. Check out the Natural History Museum for jaw-dropping prehistoric fun, Shanghai Children’s Museum will entertain young kids for about 1 to 2 hours with space and ship play areas or get the bigger kids to observe robotics or watch at IMAX at the Science and Technology Museum! Did you know that Shanghai has two aquariums? The first and smaller one is the Changfeng Aquarium which features over 300 categories of fish and marine animals and the second is the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, home to 10,000 varieties of sea creatures and the largest underwater tunnel in the world. It is a world-class facility!

3. Bowling, Arcades and/or Laser Tag

X Club: B1, 366 Zhaojiabang Lu, near Xiangyang Lu, Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 2-11pm, Sat and Sun, 10am-midnight, Tel: 33561255, a 15-minute game is RMB 50.

A knock-out option for the older boys is laser tag of course, and there are plenty of options in the city including X Club (not for the faint-hearted if you don’t like fandom, or don’t like your kids being around bars). But why not head a bit farther out to do a bit more of the both? Hit the Taroko in Vanke Qibao mall for bowling, laser tag and even some arcade games!

4. Go to the Movies!

Palace IMAX: 6/F IAPM Mall, 999 Huaihai Zhong Lu near Shanxi Nan Lu, Open 24 hours, Tel: 51093988. Ticket prices depend on the movie, type and day.

Treat the kids to a high-tech movie theatre at Palace IMAX IAPM with 3D options! With plenty of eats and treats in the building, you might even be able to sneak some shopping in whilst you park daddies with the kids. Keen to go old school for a bit of charm? See a movie at Cathay Cinema, and ignore all the moaning about how there isn’t any IMAX.

5. Board Games and.. Mr X

Mr. X: 825 Dingxi Lu near Yan’an Xi Lu, Opening Hours: 10am-2am, Tel: 62819019

Game night anyone? When they say ‘I’m bored’… you know it’s time to bring out the board games and invite the neighbors! It might be fun to see how everyone ‘copes’ with old-fashioned fun or even charades! If staying indoors is really driving everyone nuts, head to Mr. X for a ‘live’ dose of gaming. An escape and puzzle room concept, you choose your theme and figure your way out with the aid of clues and each other! With no phones or cameras allowed inside, it could take your family bonding to a whole new level (NB: this is only for big kids!)
