Trendy Things to do on Jian Guo Xi Lu

With the return of Wukang Lu, the neighboring Jian Guo Xi Lu also bursts back to life with trendy new shops. Some things to expect include the Shikumen-style luxurious Capella hotel, Michelin star Japanese restaurant Sushi Taro Ten, dessert store Bobo LEE, Western villa restaurant Opposite, offices, cafés and much, much more.



No longer than 2km, the street is packed with private houses, interesting boutiques and shops, and lined with beautiful Chinese parasol trees.


Known for its serenity and peace, the street is rich in culture and history, and is the former residence of Chinese writer Ba Jin, and various noteworthy individuals.


Cité Bourgogne: 172 Jian Guo Xi Lu



Ba Jin wrote his famous book, A Dream of the Sea, and other novels here.


Fu Lu Xin Cun: 365 Jian Guo Xi Lu



Shipping magnate, Tung Chao Yang, and his son, former Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Tung Chee-hwa resided in the 5th unit here.


Xuhui Organ Jian Guo Kindergarten: 570 Jian Guo Xi Lu



In 1939, Wang Jingwei fled to Shanghai, and along with his wife, Chen Yujun, stayed in the garden villa here.



No. 628 is now the Polish Consulate office, and was previously residence of Hong Kong magnate, Wang Shi Xin.

Rich chicken wing and fish bladder soup @ Shang Fang Hotpot




Hailing from Hong Kong, Shang Fang hotpot sits in Jianyeli in Jian Guo Xi Lu. The soup broth goes through a 12-hour cooking process, to ensure that it’s thick and rich.



The shop is known for their large mushrooms, and is possibly the only place in Shanghai that sells it. Do note that there is a limit of 10-20 servings per day.

Cuisine well-loved by celebrities like Takeshi Kaneshiro, Beckham and more @ Bobo LEE



Winning celebrities like Takeshi Kaneshiro, Becham, Karen Mok, Zhang Zhen and more, world famous Bobo LEE Cake finally opens its store opposite Jianyeli Capella Hotel.




A project three years in the making, in the early days BoboLEE sold its cakes through its e-commerce platform. With the new store, fans will now be able to dine in and enjoy their pastries over a cup of coffee or champagne, plated on French Haviland crockery.

Jian Ye Li



Keeping the old Shanghai Shikumen architecture, Jian Ye Li has around 260 Shikumen houses, and came under the protection of the Shanghai Municipal Construction Protection Unit in 1994. Thereafter, it became a place of attraction under the investment of Hengfu Company, and is now home to many quality restaurants and hotels.


World-class hotel @ Shanghai Jianyeli Capella Hotel



The high-end Shanghai Jianyeli Capella hotel quietly sits on Jian Guo Xi Lu, and provides 55 villa style accommodations, and 40 apartment style accommodations – all within the heart of Shanghai.



Retaining the classic Shikumen elements (think red bricks) legendary Chinese designer, Jayalbrahim, designed the hotel with guest rooms starting from 111㎡. It’s the only villa-style hotel in the city.

Luxurious French Restaurant @ le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire



The first project by Pierre Gagnaire in Shanghai, le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire is a trendy French restaurant that provides an open dining concept within the Jianyeli Capella hotel.




Designing the restaurant’s menu, dessert and wine list, Gagnaire refreshes the menu every season, and has his trusted Executive Chef, Romain Chapel, assisting by his side. Romain Chapel started out working as an assistant for his dad, Alain Chapel and, in six years, climbed from being a 1 Michelin star chef to a 3 Michelin star one.

Simple and elegant French bakery @ La Boulangerie by le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire



Another project by legendary French chef, Pierre Gagnaire, la Boulangerie is a minimalistic bakery, situated in The Gallery Hotel.



Using imported butter and flour from France, those working around the area will be able to easily pick up a croissant and coffee here to enjoy a quick afternoon pick me up. And for those feeling fancy, the bakery provides a dine-in option that allows you to enjoy TWG coffee or Lavazza coffee over delightful French pastries.

Michelin Star Japanese Restaurant @ Sushi Taro Ten



One Michelin star restaurant, Sushi Taro Ten, is a 2-storey place that provides a private and heart warming dining experience for all, manned by the boss, Taro, himself.



The restaurant offers a total of around 20 seating spots, and invited three renowned Japanese chefs to help run the restaurant. Allowing diners to enjoy the sushi making process, the private and public dining areas are made into a bar-style, allowing the chef to easily demonstrate his skills.



Providing an omakase experience, each meal is around RMB 1000 and starts with an appetizer, followed by sashimi, then steamed vegetables, mixed vegetables, hand rolls, and miso soup before finally ending with dessert.

Old meets modern cafe @ 1267 Kaffee



Deriving its name from June 7th 2012, the date when the boss found the coffee beans to be used in the cafe, 1267 is an old Shanghai-themed cafe providing quality coffee.



The 3-storey loft style cafe has a music room on the top floor, which can be converted to a private meeting room or cinema.



Apart from the beautiful settings the coffee here is superb, and uses German Dinzler beans to create its rich and smooth coffee.

Comfortable and casual, Blacksheep store front uses largely white and glass, to create a bright and spacious place for its diners. On the artisanal Jian Guo Xi Lu, the minimalistic and modern Fruicy store is decorated with dry flowers and gold lighting, giving it a more feminine ambiance. The grapefruit mojito uses large slices of grapefruit and peppermint leaves, making it a refreshing drink on a hot summer day.

Hidden Elegance @ Dayin Vihara



Situated on Chongqing Nan Lu, Dayin Vihara is a bookstore, theatre, art gallery, school and tea house all rolled into one. When serving their food, the shop keeps to an antique theme and carefully plates dishes on wooden antique boxes.

Occupying the entire villa, Opposite uses the first floor as a lounge, and the second as a private dining area serving Western dishes, and manned by Chef Jenson. The first floor lounge is inspired by the American alcohol-ban period, creating a sense of mystery and charm, and the second floor a cosy dining spot through the use of warm color tones.



The second floor menu is filled with creativity, and one of the signature dishes is the seafood tart, which has a similar look as the Panna Cotta and Japanese Chawamushi, with a cream base topped with sweet prawns and 10g of sea urchin, and drizzled with a lobster broth.

A hidden gem on Jian Guo Xi Lu, the Italian restaurant provides peace in the bustling city and serve hearty Italian dishes and quality alcohol.

3D Japanese Cuisine @ Fish Hunt



The 20-seater Omakase store re-defines expensive Japanese restaurant in Shanghai. The entire store re-creates the Japanese “bird house” look and feel with natural stones and solid wood, and the greatest selling point here is the naked 3D projector and dining experience. The dining experience is only available to eight diners sitting at the bar seat. Throughout the experience, watch flower petals fall, fish swimming, birds flying and more.



The restaurant only has two types of menu – RMB 598 and RMB 898 Omakase set meal.
