Shanghai is a city that keeps surprising us with hidden gems. If you grew up in the 90s’ and spent a lot of your childhood in arcades, here’s a place that will bring forth an immense feeling of nostalgia.

Liehuo Arcade Hall opened in 1999 and is hidden right in the center of Shanghai - next to Nanjing Xi Lu. It's the only arcade left in Shanghai.

Liehuo Arcade has almost 100 old and trendy games from the 90s. Most of the machines still have Japanese instructions (as they were imported from Japan. But you don't have to worry, because if you ask nicely, the staff there will patiently teach you how to operate them.

After all these years, even the prices haven't changed. Before 2017, it was 50 cents for one token. Now, it is RMB 1 for one token. Not bad for a few minutes of old-school gaming fun.

Most of the arcade games will only cost you one token per play, with which you can often get three to four rounds! For others such as the racing cars, drum players and shooting games, they'll usually cost you around 1-2 tokens. With only RMB 30, you can easily spend a whole afternoon here.

These arcade games are almost 20 or 30 years old, so sometimes you'll find that they definitely need a little repairing. Of course, with this kind of equipment it can be hard to find the components needed to do so. Luckily, some loyal players will repair the machines at their own expense, but we definitely recommend making a trip to this blast from the past before it disappears.
