How to Never Leave Your House and Still Crush Life

Puja ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-30

We've had some pretty dreary weather lately and all we want to do is hide deep in our bed burrito. Don’t go out, why would you do that to yourself? We live in a city that delivers basically anything you could ever want to your door. Here’s our rundown on everything you need for the perfect weekend in!

Step 1: Remove the Filth

We are all busy people. We all work too much, who has time to clean? NO ONE (unless you’re like me and deep clean anything in sight when stressed). “But Ayi comes only on Monday and it’s been a while since the toilet was scrubbed!” Chill Kris, if you’re going to spend the entire weekend in your apartment then you want it to be fresh and fabulous. Finding an Ayi isn’t that difficult but if you have time restrictions, there’s an app for that! Hire an Ayi right now to come and clean up the mess.

Ayi Bang

By using the unfortunately titled “Ayi Bang,” you can hire an Ayi for RMB 25-30 per hour without stepping out of your house or making any phone call! Introverts rejoice! Putting your address and appointment time, you can choose an Ayi from different places. Some of them can even cook for you. Here's a rough guide on how to operate the application.

1. Begin by inputting your city and select General cleaning.

2. Tap Setting first, then it will redirect to the Log In page which requires you to put in your phone number so that you can receive a verification code.

3. After you enter the verification code, you will be automatically redirected to the Setting page where you can input your address and select how many ayis you require and for how long.

Step 2: Brunch

Brunch is an essential part of Shanghai living and no weekend is complete without a Bloody Mary and an Eggs Benedict. Here are seven amazing brunch places that deliver on Eleme or Sherpas.

Al’s Diner

It’s not a brunch list until Al’s is mentioned! The classic diner caters to all palates. Order the Blueberry Lemon-Ricotta Pancakes (RMB 60) or the Gracie’s Burger (RMB 40.8) to start the day right and maybe throw in a dessert or two into your shopping cart. You might be comatose after but it’s oh so worth it.

Moka Bros

Only available on Eleme, the Beijing-originated restaurant is a classic twist on the likes of Wagas and Baker & Spice. If you’re feeling something light and healthy, this is your place. Get the Mexican bowl (RMB 68) if you’re in the mood for some spice in your life or a refreshing Berry bowl (RMB 58). Finish it off with a power-packed smoothie or sweet treat if it’s your cheat day!

Co Cheese

It’s never not a good time for grilled cheese sandwiches. Treat yourself to some gourmet sandwiches from this popular restaurant on Sherpas. A family set of four sandwiches will go for RMB 430 with a bottle of wine included. Family not required to purchase. Small (but not really small) sandwiches are RMB 50 and large sets are RMB 65.

Chin Chin

WHEAT outdid themselves this year when they revamped their Fumin Lu eatery. Still dedicated to healthy eating, the menu includes everything from avocado sunny side up toast (RMB 58) to a buy one get one deal for Australian grass-fed Black Beef Burgers (RMB 98).

El Luchador

An authentic Mexican eatery is always a good option when you’re looking to binge and chill. El Luchador has a stellar RMB 90 deal that includes three tacos and finger-licking good burritos.

Spread the Bagel

A glorified hub for all bagel aficionados in Shanghai, Spread the Bagel can provide you a sweet or savory treat for your staycation. We recommend the Egg and Cheese Brekkie (RMB 30) or the Brooklyn Pastrami Bagelwich (RMB 68).

Step 3: Let the dog out

You have brunched to your heart’s content. However, with all those carbs, going out is even less likely now. How on earth are you going to walk the beast/dog? Easy answer, don’t do it! I’m not advocating animal cruelty, I am simply advocating paying someone else to do your dirty work. Gotta love the 21st century.

Spare Leash is a completely trust-worthy, cage-free organization dedicated to the wellbeing of animals and their owners’ busy schedules. Letting one of their dog-walkers will only set you back RMB 70 for a 30 minute walk or RMB 90 for a full 60 minutes while you recharge your human batteries. Visit their website below for more info on services and to book an appointment.

Post-walk is going to leave your pooch pretty mucked up and gross no matter how stinking cute they are. Bark Shanghai allows you to choose between sending it off to a day at the doggie spa or in-house grooming. If you choose the former, they’ll come and collect your pet, groom, and deliver them back at your door pleasant and fresh later that day. If only there were a human spa that would pick me up as well.

Step 4: ~Relax~

Had a long week? We all deserve a little R&R. Yu Massage offers a ‘call out’ service for all your massage-related emergencies. You need to book at least two hours in advance for them to send someone to massage the sh*t out of you.

Yu Massage

Yu Massage offers good services that don’t break the bank, even with the outcall surcharge. The treatments menu is short, with five massages on offer including a traditional Chinese body massage and an ‘aroma oil’ foot massage for RMB 150/60 mins. A 90 minute ‘four hands aroma oil massage’ delivered by two therapists is RMB 388 (RMB 488/120 mins), a similar price to those offered in-house at less luxurious spas.

If massage isn’t your thing then maybe get a manicure or a pedicure with Chanel’s traveling spa!

Chanel’s Traveling Spa

Chanel Zheng travels all over Shanghai with her materials in tow, dispensing a huge array of treatments from simple mani-pedis (RMB 40-60) to eyelash extensions (RMB 200). Her treatments are completely professional but tailored to each individual. Rumor has it, she also likes to develop lasting relationships with clients! Even better, these prices all include the travel rate.

Step 5: Run errands

You were meant to run errands today and restock your fridge ahead of time, get some dry cleaning done and get a busted zip repaired. WELL, THAT ISN’T HAPPENING. Don’t freak, friend! You can get same-day delivery from Hema, and western friendly FIELDS. You can even get your laundry washed and a zip fixed all with the simple push of a button.

What’s Hema?

Hema is a grocery service and supermarket owned and operated by Alibaba. Simply put, it’s Eleme but tailored for grocery shopping. You can also forego the delivery service to visit their physical store, but be advised: If you want to purchase something, the only payment options there are Alipay and the Hema App. They don't take cash or cards.

How to use Hema App?

1. Search '盒马' (or simply 'Hema') in the App Store and download the App.

If you already have a Taobao account, you can log in very fast through the Taobao App on your phone. It’s also easy to sign up with your phone number.

2. Put things in your cart.

Fortunately, the category of goods is very clear. Even if you don’t understand Chinese at all, it’s easy to find the things you need by browsing through photos. They have everything you'd expect from a normal supermarket, from fresh fruit to organic vegetables, fresh seafood and meats, imported cheeses, bakery items, liquor... You can order EVERYTHING on Hema App.

According to Hema, prices of their goods are, on average, 10% cheaper than the market price. This is because they order their products directly from farms and farmers.

3. Check out and set delivery time.

After finishing your checklist, hit the blue button and go to the next step. Fill in your address, then pick a delivery time that suits you. The delivery time of Hema is from 8am to 9pm but if you put the order too late, you might have to wait until the next day to get your order.

Like their actual stores, the payment method on the App is Alipay only as well. Ultimately, it’s a high-quality and trustworthy service that everyone in Shanghai should try out, even if you can't read Chinese characters.

Another delivery service that we absolutely love is FIELDS. Popular among both expat and Chinese customers, FIELDS delivers groceries directly to your door, offering fresh vegetables and fruit – including many organic options – imported meat and seafood, cheese and baked goods.

Unlike Hema, you’ll only be able to enjoy same-day delivery if you order before 4pm. But, their delivery time starts as early as 6am in the morning so get to ordering! Free delivery for all orders over RMB 200 and if you’re new, you’ll receive a free gift.

LaundryEx

An English-speaking service that starts and ends at your front door, LaundryEx has a simple website but their services are quite extensive. From your nasty work-out shirt to your rugs, they will send your laundry back smelling fresh and neatly folded. Dry-cleaning also offered! An average wash and fold will cost approximately RMB 59 per load while dry cleaning ranges from RMB 80+. We highly recommend LaundryEx for their excellent customer service and quality. Visit their website to place an order or see prices.

Easy Life Laundry (ELL)

Easy Life Laundry is another great alternative for laundry services. Similar to LaundryEx, they do wash and fold, shoes, carpet, and bedding cleaning. Their stand-out quality, however, is the repair and alteration service! Changes, like replacing buttons, re-stitching, and replacing small tears, are all offered by the trained staff at ELL. Prices are fully detailed in the link below!

Step 6: Entertain yourself

Settle down on that couch ladies and gents, it’s time to watch TV like a local. Bypass the VPN nightmare by trying out a Chinese site like Tencent video (v.qq.com). From Game of Thrones, to Westworld, a LARGE variety of English movies and TV series are available at your fingertips. Most are free but for the select few that aren’t, here’s a quick rundown on how to obtain a VIP to watch.

Let’s begin watching Game of Thrones season six by typing in our query in the search bar. Episodes without a VIP at the top of the screen are free.

If you want to watch an episode that requires a VIP, you can hit the gold button to move forward with the payment (sorry).

There are a few options: RMB 20 per month, RMB 58 for 3 months, RMB 108 for 6 months, RMB 198 per year, and the best option, automatic renewal for only RMB 15 per month.

Not sure what to watch? Type in “meiju” for American TV shows and “yingju” For British TV shows. Have fun!

Step 7: Dinnertime!

It’s dinner time and you want to go all out, instead of just ordering take away again why not go mad and order at home hot pot with your own personal Chef. Haidilao is known for their amazing customer service but sending a chef to your home is really above and beyond. Order online or through their app and choose from four different sets: Set A for 2 persons at RMB 98+, Set B for 4 at RMB 158+, Set C for 6 at RMB 258+, and Set D for 8 at RMB 358+. Wanna be more extra? Have a staff member personally serve some Sichuan steamboat to you and your pals for three hours (RMB 100).

Step 8: Brighten up the place

It is pretty glum outside but before you start feeling dejected, get some flowers delivered to brighten the place up a bit.

Flower Plus

FlowerPlus owns 20,000 acres of flowers in Yunnan. Six million flowers are picked every week from there. FlowerPlus also imports flowers, but only the highest-quality ones available. They've built seven storage bases in China, with 35,000 square meters of flower factories. And, according to their website "employees only take a lightning fast 0.3 seconds to complete the packaging of a bouquet, just to ensure the flowers are super fresh when it’s been delivered to you.” The package holding your bouquet is made of strong cardboard to ensure delicate flowers are undamaged. For new customers, FlowerPlus ever offers a free vase with your first bouquet. FlowerPlus also offers mini bouquets and cactus pots, check out their WeChat for more information.

How to order: WeChat Mini Program

Price: RMB 99-169 per month

Variety: 3-8 types

Delivery time: Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays

RiversideFlower

RiversideFlower is an actual flower shop in Jiashan Market, and it’s the only flower shop we know of in Shanghai that also offers a subscription service. Even though the price of RiversideFlower is slightly higher than previously mentioned flower services, the owner assures the quality and beauty of your weekly bouquet will be incomparable. Just like the other services, you can demand any delivery time you like. RiversideFlower does day delivery for downtown Shanghai and Kuaidi delivery to the suburbs of Shanghai.

How to order: WeChat (ID: flowerorder24and7)

Price: RMB 158-358 per month

Variety: 3-4 types

Delivery time: On demand

Step 9: Drink

No Sunday is complete without a hangover from boozing it up on a Saturday night. Instead of settling for that one Tsingtao you have rolling around in the back of your fridge, treat yourself to cocktails at home. You can go mad with Laiba and get an entire cocktail lounge in your living room (takes two hours for delivery though) or if you just can’t wait that long you can get wine, beer and cocktail sets from BottlesXO at your door all under 30 minutes.
