Shanghai's No. 1 Department Center Has Been Revamped!

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-30

Shanghai's No. 1 department store launched a series of events last year that ranged from butterfly cookie giveaways last June to the opening of the A/B Center in December, and they’re now blessing Shanghai residents and visitors with the launch of their C Center where you can eat and shop to your heart's delight!

With most of the activities happening around C Center (previously known as the Oriental Commercial Building), the place will see a collection of big brand restaurants on the 8th floor - four of which will be opening their first China branch! So don't wait any longer, grab some friends and head on over.

Besides food, shoppers will find trendy brands like Fila and other entertainment options within the center’s classy walls.

Four Overseas Brands Open Their First Chinese Branch

The expansion of the new center will see four foreign brands setting up their first branch in China - each coming with their own great story to tell.

P.F. Chang’s

This Asian brand has more than 300 stores across the world; from Beverly Hills, Mexico and Sao Paulo to Dubai, London and Seoul among hundreds of others.

The store set up its first branch in America in 1993 and is now opening its first Chinese store in Shanghai.

Going for a traditional and vintage vibe, the walls are decorated with paintings of women and pictures from the 1950s and 60s era to give a similar look and feel as its other branches worldwide.

The restaurant prides itself in following traditions, using claypot cooking methods that date back to 2,000 years ago to cook its fresh ingredients.

Two of their famous dishes here are the lettuce with chicken and tempura shrimp. The lettuce with chicken follows a traditional secret recipe and delights with its look and taste.

The crispy lettuce compliments the fragrant and savory spicy chicken and mushroom.

On the other hand, the large and tender shrimp dish is super crunchy with its tempura coating and topped with a salted egg yolk sauce that satisfies even the toughest critics.

Jones the Grocer

Hailing from Australia, this high-end food emporium sells premium products that include Spanish and Italian ham, cheese from Europe, wine, coffee flask and more.

According to the owner, the concept of eating while shopping is popular in Australia and is an experience that they wanted to keep with their new store in Shanghai.

In the branch section, the options change up every few days and shoppers can expect several classics and crowd-favorite options like carrot cake and cheesecake.

To create its moist texture, olive oil is added to the carrot cake while the cheesecake is frozen to ensure a silky finish and to retain its flavor.

Some sandwich options here include smoked salmon, vegan courgette sandwiches made from seasonal ingredients and more.

Also worthy of a mention is the nutritious Black Buckwheat Kale Roasted Sweet Potato Salad which is made from pomegranate, seeds, roasted sweet potatoes, buckwheat, and avocados among other ingredients.

Another incredible find here is their Jones Beef which is seasoned with Himalayan salt for 28 days. The meat is best eaten when cooked to medium wellness.

Their coffee is made using African beans and goes really well with Truffle chocolate.

Ji Sushi

As a very popular sushi brand, Ji Sushi adopts a slightly American interior design and hippy music playlist.

The owners aspire to provide sushi as a fast food option and look to infuse Southeast Asian flavors into their food.

An example is the egg-grilled sushi where the salted egg sauce and sushi is first baked in the oven and then topped with black caviar. The only downside to the food is that they tend to cater to diners with a stronger palette.

The place serves as a great option and pitstop for shoppers in need of a quick break and snack from a day of shopping!

Mangochilli Thai Cafe

The Thai cafe piques interest and delight with its colorful and chirpy design and menu of great Thai delights.

Parked at the entrance is a car front, and the side of the entrance displays different condiments and lunch box designs from Thailand.

Looking at the menu, the cafe is known for their Thai beef noodles where diners can choose from four different noodle types and three different types of chilis.

We tried out the glass noodles dish from Thailand which consists of beef, beef tendons and meatballs and makes for a hearty meal.

You can't miss mango sticky rice in any Thai restaurant. The rice is shaped into a heart and topped with a generous amount of coconut. The dish has the right amount of sweetness and fragrance and the mango packs a rich flavor.

Their Thai milk tea uses the authentic tea leaves, giving it the familiar fragrance and reminding us of our fond Thai holiday memories.

Great Food Options from Centers A to C

Apart from the four famous brands mentioned above, there are other great options you can expect to find inside this department store!

Nai Xue Cha

Address: 1/F, Building B, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

The popular beverage brand was designed by the Hermes Lighting company and is well-loved and known for its tea drinks.

Taking pride in the ingredients used, their tea leaves are always carefully selected by the owner and can be as expensive as RMB2,000/500g.

One of the must-trys here is the decadent durian bread, stuffed with Malaysian D24 durian and dried mangoes.

Groow

Address: 6/F, Building C, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

Opening its flagship experiential store at the Shanghai No. 1 Department Store, the branch is bigger than its other branches around.

The store adopts a clean and natural Japanese look and feel and provides healthy juice combinations for its customers.

We recommend trying all their different drink options, each of which promises to be a refreshingly sweet treat!

Hui Shijia Zhuque Restaurant

Address: 4/F, Building C, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

Out of the different branches in Shanghai, this remains our firm favorite and serves a menu of Chinese delights including rose oil salted rice.

Also, be sure to try their Scallion lettuce spring rolls, river prawn siewmai, small yellow croaker dumplings, and salted pigeons.

Mr. Burp

Address: 5/F, Building C, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

Definitely catering to the younger crowd, Mr. Burp is decorated with stylish lighting, neon decor, pink sofas and a selfie wall.

The trendy environment and ambience goes hand-in-hand with the delicious food, like the dessert stand plated on an Eiffel Tower, milkshake and black truffle fries.

Capturing the beauty of the Miao tribe, the store is decorated with different silver accessories and the service crew is decked out in Miao tribe ethnic wear.

Try out the classic pickled fish dish made from fresh fish which has a sweet and sour flavor. In the summer, try out their range of crawfish dish which will definitely not disappoint.

Bistrot

The Italian restaurant is decorated with beautiful floor-wide windows that give the place a brightly lit, spacious and comfortable ambience.

Address: 8/F, Building A, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

The pizza options here are more traditionally flavored and rustic, and the chefs here use natural yeast in their dough to ensure the crust remains crispy and fragrant.

Occasionally, the restaurant will hold children baking classes for children to teach them how to make simple and tasty treats.

Other dishes to try are their grilled pork chop and beautiful afternoon tea set menu.

Crystal Jade Kitchen & Crystal Jade Dim Sum

Address: 8/F, Building C, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

No stranger to all, Cantonese restaurant Crystal Jade, is located next to Ji Sushi.

The place is beautifully decorated with a touch of French decor on top of the regular Cantonese restaurant look and feel.

Their signature dishes here are the tender grilled pigeon, the juicy prawn dumpling and fresh lobster fried rice.

Their sister restaurant called the Crystal Jade Dimsum is one of the partnering shops here. A great place for lunch and dinner, their roasted delights are savory and well-marinated, ultimately leaving diners craving more.

Nan Restaurant

Address: 8/F, Building C, Shanghai No. 1 Department Store

With a substantial online fanbase, the restaurant delights with its light green color palette and caters to diners with a smaller appetite.

We recommend trying out the Spanish mushroom chicken and black truffle xiaolongbao. They even serve a five-flavored xiaolongbao combo with each dumpling separately wrapped in a cute steam basket.

Other delightful dishes include the siewmai and prawn dumpling dishes, all neatly placed and plated when served.

For desserts, we recommend you try their pumpkin steamed bun, green bean cake, matcha pudding and mango pudding to end off a great meal!

Shedding into a new skin, the Shanghai No.1 Department Center also carries Shanghai’s first La Mer store inside their A building, and has an 800sqm cultural space showcasing items from the 1930s on the 7th floor.

Some of the items include pottery, tea cups and writings from the industrial era to showcase how people used to communicate and live back then

Over 80 recordings documenting life in Shanghai back then.

More common items like the bread machine, bicycle, water filter, oil lamp and more help show the progression and changes in our lifestyle over time.

The newly-revamped Shanghai No. 1 Department Store caters to the younger crowds with endless food and shopping options. All in all, it's definitely worth a visit!
