Where to Get Wet and Wild For Less Than RMB 60

Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-30

Although there are plenty of pool facilities in Shanghai available at places like gyms, hotels and member clubs, most of them usually come with a pretty high price tag. If you’re not up for signing your life away just to join a club (half a month’s salary) or you simply don’t feel like paying over RMB 150 to use a pool for a day is worth your money, fear not because we have an alternative! Introducing: Shanghai’s public pools!

Now, before you shudder and begin imagining cholera at every turn, give me a moment to explain. First of all, most of the public swimming pools are large, spacious (especially if you’re not using them at peak times) and pretty clean.

They may not have the fanciest changing rooms or supply you with high-end shampoos and body lotions, but they are great if all you’re looking to do is take a dip and only part with 20 kuai. So let’s break down where they are and how you can use them.

Step 1: Medical certificate

Most pools say you need a ‘medical certificate’ to use them. What this actually means is you just need to sign a piece of paper saying you don’t have skin disease or heart disease or bird flu or anything else nasty, but that doesn’t really matter since chlorine kills everything anyways. Regardless, you still have to sign it. If you don’t speak Chinese, I recommend doing lots of smiling and thumbs up and mime having a healthy heart, then sign where the receptionists point. These health forms normally cost under RMB 10 and last for a year.

(Side note: sometimes they take you into a small room and make you fill out the forms there. Don’t panic, they’re not actually going to test you for anything.)

Step 2: Session times

Normally, the swimming sessions are split into blocks of 90 minutes, so you pay for 90 minutes and if you stay longer you’ll just need to pay extra. The extra fees are pretty low and most places aren’t even policed. Remember to take cash as most of these places are allergic to Alipay and any other form of payment.

Step 3: Changing

The changing room situations vary from place to place, but set your expectations low so you can only be pleasantly surprised when you get there. We recommend taking plastic flip flops to walk around and be ready to face a few curious glances as you will probably be the only laowai.

Step 4: Bring the correct apparel

Swimming cap. Haha. But seriously, it’s fine and you need to wear one and when everyone looks like a walking talking condom it’s very leveling. Girls, bring out your swimsuit / bikini while guys will need to ditch the trunks and dig out their speedos.

Step 5: Flounder to your heart’s content

Now that you’ve got all the necessary information to prepare yourself for your public dip, time to locate the nearest pool! Here are a bunch of options:
