Elegant Italian Flair at the Newly-Opened Terra Rossa

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-30

Just snapping a photograph of Terra Rossa's interiors is enough to make your friends turn green with envy, but what about when you start taking photographs of the food? Well, that's what we're going to find out. Having just celebrated their grand opening on July 21st, we paid this new Italian restaurant a visit to see what they had to offer.

Located on Jianguo Dong Lu near Madang Lu, Terra Rossa is situated within walking distance to the subway, next to a shopping mall set to open later this year. This latest addition of Italian flair will undoubtedly be a key highlight to the Huangpu district.

Boasting a chic and sophisticated look, we were greeted by interiors that showed true elegance. As soothing music washed over us we felt utterly relaxed as we took our seats and knew right away that we were in for a treat.

Looking around the room, we gazed upon walls that were adorned with mirrors edged in golden frames and the beautiful tungsten lights that were hanging from the ceiling like golden glowing orbs. The color scheme used throughout Terra Rossa creates this soothing ambience and adds a layer of elegance that won't go amiss.

Let's not forget what really brought us here, though - the food!

Offering an extensive menu that consists of appetizers, soup, pasta, risotto, and pizza among other items, it is clear that this menu will cater to the masses - and most definitely to our bellies. Plus, if you're bringing the kids along, they have a menu just for them too.

Grilled Australian Angus Ox Tongue

We began our meal with the Grilled Australian Angus Ox Tongue Appetizer (RMB 98) - a succulent serving accompanied by Arugula, slim lemon wedges and a splattering of mascarpone cheese and mashed avocado dotted along the plate.

It takes 12 hours and six kinds of fresh spices to marinate the ox tongue and, after four hours of slow-cooking at low temperatures, the flavors are truly locked into the meat. As a result, the thick morsels of ox tongue are incredibly juicy and tender. Yet, they hold the slightest crisp bite on the surface following a final cooking step that involves frying the pieces in a pan with butter.

If given the choice, we could eat this all day every day.

While the pieces of ox tongue are a little on the oilier side, the droplets of avocado and a squeeze of lemon really work to cut through for a fresh finish.

So, what next? Well, how do you like your eggs? We like ours sprinkled with black truffle!

Cooked at 62 degrees, the Spring Egg with Italian Black Truffle (RMB 68) is a rich and decadent "soup" dish served with a small portion of mushrooms.

We definitely didn't want to hesitate on diving into this dish. Giving all of the ingredients in the bowl a quick mix, the incredible scent of black truffle wafted into the air around us and left us drooling in anticipation.

Linguine with Boston Lobster

Similar to that of fettucchine and trenette, linguine is a traditional Italian pasta that holds thick and creamy sauces very well – and that's exactly what Terra Rossa has used for their Linguine with Boston Lobster (RMB 198).

Luxurious and rich in flavor, the thick and creamy sauce that the linguine is doused in has a sweet, yet sour, finish in every mouthful. The lobster that sits atop the pasta is the real crowning feature, sitting brilliantly red and calling out to us to dig in.

The firm yet tender lobster meat seemed to just melt in our mouths with every bite, while the mellow sweet and sour taste complemented the bed of thick, creamy tomato sauce that covered the linguine.

The dish is finished in a lobster oil as a final touch, enhancing the flavor in its entirety.

With risotto being an Italian classic, we were eager to pick one out of the menu to try and the Risotto with Deep-Fried Cod Tongue and Shrimp (RMB 108) instantly caught our eye. As we discovered, fried cod tongue pieces are actually made from a little muscle in the neck of the fish, with a texture and flavor that sits somewhere between a cod fillet and a whole belly clam.

In Terra Rossa's intriguing dish, these pieces of cod tongue were fried to a golden crisp and when eaten together with the creamy and soft risotto, provided a lovely contrast in texture.

Finally, it was time to treat our sweet tooth!

With a final delight from Terra Rossa's dessert options, this next dish was quite possibly the star of the show. Nothing says WOW! more than the glistening galaxy beyond that we're always striving to comprehend, and this galactic dish was beautifully-plated with small scoops of dragonfruit, mango, kiwi, merengue and symmetrical lines of chocolate decorating the empty space surrounding the main feature. A galaxy of stars right before our very eyes.

Want to know what's hidden inside?

The Passionfruit Mousse (RMB 68)!

Encased in this thin shell of white chocolate which looked like it had been painstakingly hand-painted (trust us, it took some persuading to break it open) is this soft, creamy and sweet mousse topped with a passionfruit jelly. Presenting a wonderful combination of flavors, this dessert was both sweet and tangy at the same time and made for a delightful finish for our palates.

With such a positive experience and a very subtle Asian influence throughout the Italian dishes served, Terra Rossa certainly delivers if you're looking for a relaxed yet elegant lunch or dinner.
