The Second Hotel Indigo Opens with 1930s Shanghai Style

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-29

Back in 2010, Hotel Indigo opened its first branch in the country - and Asia - at the Bund in Shanghai. Now, after eight years, they've opened a second in Hongqiao and here's what you can expect to find!

Shanghai’s second Hotel Indigo has arrived

Bringing entertainment to Da Hongqiao

Opening in Hongqiao, Hotel Indigo is situated in the heart of Hongqiao's CBD and is easily accessible by different modes of public transport and the National Convention & Exhibition Center.

By incorporating elements of its neighborhood into the design, the hotel features parts of Hongqiao's history - including the lives of the people in the area - into its design.

Following history, the hotel is greatly inspired by the lives of wealthy tycoons of 1930s and 40s Shanghai, with a central theme focusing on that of the "business tycoon."

Understanding the art behind the design

Learning and appreciating Hotel Indigo’s designs

Step inside the hotel and you'll experience the theme first-hand through a contrast of modern architecture and antique furniture.

Next to the main hall is an exhibition area housing collectibles from all around the world for visitors to appreciate.

After finishing the check-in procedure, staff will present visitors with a set of dice that determines a reward based on the number they shake. Just some of the prizes include a ride in a yellow cab around Hongqiao and a welcome cocktail.

There are other game-like elements hidden within aspects of the décor here too for visitors to uncover during their stay. The rooftop swimming pool even has its own "winner" logo to coincide with the little easter eggs that can be found throughout the hotel.

At the front desk, the design of the walkway is inspired by Shanghai's Shikumen style, allowing visitors to feel as if they're walking by the old villas on the city's streets.

Many of the hotel's corners are decorated with leather suitcases, emphasizing the "Old Shanghai" vibe that is encapsulated throughout the venue.

Where vintage luxury meets modern

Each room of Hotel Indigo's new opening also encapsulates the central theme through decor and furnishings. Televisions are set against wallpapers inspired by the old green Chinese stamps, while the headboards are decorated with hats, bow ties and saxophones that'll make you reminisce over the golden age of Jazz.

Vintage green is the main color used throughout the hotel's rooms: a rich color to connect past and present together through interior design.

Looking closer, both the shelves and leather cases in each of the rooms are placed to emphasize the whole vintage look and feel that the hotel is going for.

The bathrooms, on the other hand, are brighter with black and white tiles and golden faucets that reflect Shanghai's art deco history.

The bathroom also has two basins. For suites, they've installed bathtubs.

The shower amenities provided all come from a British brand Gilchrist & Soames and feature antioxidant properties.

What's more, guest rooms also promise a great view of Hongqiao from their large windows. We wouldn't mind waking up to this view every morning!

For the added vintage touch, guest rooms also house photographs and vintage items such as pocket watches, cameras and more laid out in display cabinets.

InterContinental Hotel Group’s latest café concept

A picture-perfect café

The hotel also features the latest concept from the InterContinental Hotel Group: "Craft Café" on its first floor.

Adopting an open kitchen, the café is decked out with industrial style electricals and mosaic-tiled tables. But that's not all they're offering - they've got some delicious looking dishes on offer too.

BBQ Pork Ribs

The BBQ Pork Ribs are grilled to perfection, holding a smoky glaze and tender interior. Accompanied by a serving on onion rings, this would definitely go well with a glass of wine.

Winter Prawn Salad

Dining on hot summer days leaves us craving for lighter meals and the Winter Prawn Salad is just that: a refreshing plate of green papaya salad with grilled prawns. To top it all off, the salad is finished with a Thai-style homemade sour and spicy sauce.

In addition to the Craft Café, the hotel's top floor will house the 188 Balcony Bar - a new, private dating spot! here you'll be able to enjoy a 270-degree view of Hongqiao's CBD over a glass of premium red wine, cocktail or draft beer.

Restaurant by day, private banquet dinner by night

Dine in elegance

The entire first floor will be dedicated to an exclusive and spacious dining area, complete with private meeting rooms and a banquet hall.

If staying on business, you'll find that each meeting room is equipped with a quality sound system, blackboard, sofa and more for your small meeting needs. But by night, the place transforms into a private dining restaurant for diners to visit.

Exciting, no?
