As if we weren’t spoiled enough with delicious cuisines from all over China and the world here in Shanghai, LeTAO is treating us with the opening of their first-ever store in China and expected to make some serious waves in the local dessert scene.

Originally from the Japanese island of Hokkaido, LeTAO is an increasingly popular name among dessert lovers, most praised for its two-layered cheesecakes which have helped the brand secure a top spot on the 2017 Yahoo Most Searched Awards list. Their desserts are often considered to be a great Japanese gift or souvenir.

There is surely plenty to see and eat in Japan, but why spend all that money on traveling there when you can get a taste of their culture barely a Mobike ride away? Get a few of your friends together and head on over to LeTAO in Xintiandi this August!

Popular Japanese Dessert Brand from Hokkaido

Amazing flavor cheese fans love

LeTAO has emerged as a very popular dessert brand with unique origins in Hokkaido, the second-largest island in Japan, and a two-layered cheesecake that is gradually gaining regional and soon worldwide fame. As one of the first Japanese-style cheese cake shops, you can see how famous it is just by looking at Instagram.

It’s common to see a herd of excited fans waiting in long lines to get a taste of LeTAO’s tasteful desserts on the cross-section street in Otaru on Hokkaido where the original location of the brand lies.

Hungry foodies come from various places, sometimes rather unexpected ones, as people travel specifically to Hokkaido for LeTAO: “Definitely worth the trip!” a customer commented after trying their two-layered cheesecake.

International expansion began in Seoul in 2015

LeTAO opened its first overseas branch in the fashionable neighborhood of Sinsa-dong in Gangnam, Seoul in April 2015 and became an instant favorite among the dessert-appreciating crowds looking for something new and trendy to bite into.

Following their success in South Korea, LeTAO recognized the vast amount of opportunities to satisfy a lot more sweet teeth in the region and set up its second international branch inside the IFC mall in Hong Kong in October 2016 which was very well received by local critics. In only two weeks, newspapers around the city were praising the Japanese desserts for being “perfectly made and delicious.”

Its presence around Asia continued to grow steadily with new locations set up in Singapore, Thailand, Taipei and now mainland China!

The Story of LeTAO

Giving you even more reasons to fall in love with the brand

Almost exactly 20 years ago in June 1998, LeTAO’s founder Kawagoe set up his small, beautiful shop of European flair and named it after the initials of the French phrase "La Tour Amitie Otaru" meaning "The Amiable Tower of Otaru”.

The tower is a landmark in the port city of Otaru on Hokkaido and is even more appreciated by tourists and locals alike at night time.

From its inception, the brand's values have revolved around the idea of being "thankful to life and nature, be[ing] strong and overcoming all hardships." The quality of the ingredients used in their creations is crucial to ensuring that every slice is served with the highest standards and that's how they've maintained their popularity.

The blend of perfected texture and mesmerizing flavors has caught the attention of many locals and foreigners and successfully lived up to its high expectations.

Today, the Japanese brand has gone from being a regular dessert shop to being viewed as a great gift shop for people to bring their favorite desserts back home and offer them to their loved ones. Yep, that’s how good their cakes are!

Preserving and improving their brand for over 20 years.

Sharing a piece of Hokkaido’s local culture with every slice

The picturesque island of Hokkaido isn’t just home to gorgeous natural sights but also to numerous sweets that have gained worldwide fame over the years.

Made using dairy products from local farms.

Among other things, Hokkaido is known for its high-quality milk and other dairy products which LeTAO uses to make their mouth-watering cheesecakes.

In addition to the local products used which include milk, wheat flour and fresh cream, the LeTAO has gone lengths and traveled the world in search of other ingredients that could help build an unconventional culture of Western confectionary blended with local traditions. Their recipes now include mascarpone cheese from Italy and cream cheese from Australia.

Staying true to themselves over the past 20 years, LeTAO hopes to continue to improve their food quality and taste every day, and plan to achieve this through rigorous testing and research.

LaTao's most signature cheesecake

The signature double-cheese cake (Double Fromage) has two layers: one uses mascarpone cheese mousse with a light and silky texture as top layer, while the bottom layer reveals a richer and more dense texture of Australian cream cheese. The whole cake itself is then layered with a sponge cake base, and covered by cake powder that brings the entire dessert together for a memorable tasting experience.

The cake simply melts in your mouth and holds a strong cheese flavor. The perfect amount of sweetness and smoothness in texture will be sure to give you a sense of LeTAO's dedication.

Crispy and cheesy biscuits made by LeTAO

Ironai

We’ve talked a lot about their cheesecakes, but LeTAO also serves biscuits that are made with the same cheese used for their cakes - Ironai.

Inspired by the cute neighborhood of Ironai in Otaru, these biscuits are sweet and rich in tasty flavors that always leave customers wanting more without fail.

A sweet and sour treat

 Petit Chocolate Strawberry

Inside each of their chocolate balls lies a dried and frozen strawberry while the outside is dusted with strawberry powder to create a mix of sweet and sour tastes.

Perfect Combination of Chocolate and Toasted Almonds

Petit Chocolate Cocoa

In similar fashion, those chocolate treats are filled with almonds and sprinkled with cocoa powder to create a nutty and slightly bitter yet delicious dessert.

Innovation at the Heart of LeTAO’s Dessert Process

As the brand continues to expand its operations and fame while staying relevant to changing food trends and seasons, LeTAO has put a lot of effort into innovating their offerings.

They take their classic desserts as the foundation of their new creations, going as far as creating limited-edition flavors which have included Matcha, Strawberry, Peach and Honeydew.

Getting a Taste of Hokkaido in Every Corner of the World

A recurring challenge the team has faced while expanding their business overseas has been to maintain the dishes’ quality across their different branches which may not have access to the same high-quality ingredients or skilled labor as others do. It took over 3 years for LeTAO to overcome those challenges and build a solid strategy to address this issue head-on when exploring new markets.

Mastering the chilling process of their desserts has been a key differentiator for LeTAO and prides itself on their methods to bring incredible creations like their two-layered cheesecakes to everyone.

There’s More to Their Cheesecakes Than Flavor

With no advertisements or celebrity endorsements, LeTAO grew its brand and reputation organically mostly by word-of-mouth which was made possible thanks to their relentless focus on using high-quality ingredients and very talented staff.

Given the changing seasons in Japan, LeTAO also likes to innovate their offerings all year round.

Consequently, all of this put together has helped bring a lot of joy to everyone who has stepped through their doors and has had a taste of their jaw-dropping desserts.

It has for more than 20 years, and will surely continue to do so for months and years to come.

So… convinced yet?
