Address: No. 10 Shajing Lu, near Jiulong Lu

Built in 1933 by Chinese developers, the site was originally intended for use as a slaughterhouse but served a number of purposes over the years from medicine factory, cold storage facility, to its current incarnation as a ‘commercial hub for creative industries’. There are 26 'air bridges' of varying widths that dart in every direction possible, which will most likely leave you feeling a little confused at times! Definitely one of our top picks for most interesting construction in Shanghai, this is a surefire way to manipulate lighting and angles for an artistic photoshoot.

You'll follow the life of Ellis the egg, who has left the comfort of his New York apartment to visit Shanghai. How much of one’s life can you fit into an exhibition? Between yellow rental cars, a refrigerator, the New York City subway and, yes, an airport, well… quite a lot it seems.

The garden includes flowing water, decorative stones, ornate architecture, and water-side pagodas. Bamboo is one of the main features of the garden, with over 10 kinds of bamboo planted there. Perfect for those nature shots we know you love to take.

BB Bomb

Address: 1F, City Hotel Shanghai, 5-7 Shaanxi Nan Lu

Hours: Daily, 2pm-2am

Tel: 021 62036520

Kind of a classy punk-rock vibe, if you will. There are several interesting things to point out about the place. First, it's inside the 4-star City Hotel Shanghai. Second, there are huge windows that span the entire length of the restaurant and look out onto Shaanxi Nan Lu (VERY COOL). Third, the owner likes fun, funky decor and there's a ton of it strewn about. Neon lights, skateboards, artworks, I think I even saw some bubbles floating around at some point.

Tel: 021 5204 7828

Hours:  Monday to Friday, 9am-7pm; Saturday to Sunday, 10am-7:30pm

We could definitely get used to this place - a cafe mainstay that is most definitely popular among tourists, hipsters and anyone in the mood for some quality coffee in an Instagrammable setting. The modern and minimalist interior ensure a comfortable atmosphere and is perfect for when you need to get in the zone to do some work.

This store is designed for extremely Instagrammable photographs in mind. Neon lights and concrete walls give it a strong industrial sense of design and, of course, we're seeing a lot of people relishing in the fact that they can pose alongside popular slogans.

Anfu Lu

Anfu Lu has its own collection of cafes, galleries, and boutiques but remains to be one of the more quiet streets. Ride your bike and feel free to snap a selfie with flowers or ceramics that are sold on the street. Or pop by one of the local cafes to pick up a coffee or snack to place in your picture-perfect photographs.

Wuyuan Lu

One of the many trendy Shanghai streets in the expat-ridden area of Xuhui. Lane houses and tiny boutiques can serve as the perfect focus for your “#ihaveathingfordoors” posts.

Tianping Lu

Tianping Lu is another quiet street that will offer up a quick detour from Xuhui district to north Yan'an Lu. You'll pass by a number of small coffee shops and more as you cycle under the cooling shade of the tree-lined streets.

If you're looking for a smaller bite to help you refuel, Avec Toi is a little bakery on Tianping Lu serving up some pretty cool pastry delights such as Croissants (RMB 13), Pain au Chocolat (RMB 20) and Viennois Chocolat (RMB 8). They have a cozy set up, but sitting by the floor-length street-facing window is a delight as the sun begins to set.

Xingguo Lu

In the charming heart of Xuhui, Xingguo Lu also boasts a handful of restaurants and bars worth visiting after a summery cycle. With parking spots right outside the majority of them, they make for a convenient break!

Stop by at Rumors Coffee for a hit of caffeine to fuel the rest of your afternoon cycle. They've got a warm and comfortable environment here that leave you feeling utterly relaxed for the rest of the afternoon.

Tianzifang

Address: 210 Taikang Lu

Much like 1933, Tianzifang has transformed itself from historical residential architectures (Shikumen or stone-framed houses) into a very trendy (albeit touristy) area with ample bars, cafes, galleries, boutiques, and studios. Locals, hipsters, and tourists alike flock here to explore the novelties that bury themselves in the lanes of Tianzifang.
