New Vegan-Friendly Tartine Rocks Casual Eats

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-28

There's been a lot of action on Jianguo Xi Lu lately and Tartine is a shiny new gem that you'll be able to find here.

Focusing on providing healthy foods in a homey environment, the “café” dishes up an impressive selection of raw desserts and vegan-friendly dishes. Basically, if you're vegan and you want to dine with an omnivore friend, this is the casual spot you will want to chill at.

You don’t need to look further than the owner Louisa to find the inspiration behind Tartine. Louisa was brought up eating, baking and cooking healthy food, but it was only while she was studying in England that she discovered a lot of exciting organic and vegan cuisine.

Tartine started off as a university project; Louisa wanted to create a business that connected healthy living and exciting all-natural eating. Her idea was simple: to create adventures on toast. And that was how Tartine was born.

Soon Louisa realized that Tartine was not only about bringing healthy dishes to the table, but also food that is simply made with no extra additives or sugars. It was equally important for her to create a menu that was adaptable for vegan and non-vegans alike.

The secret to her tasty tartines is in the bread. Made over rye toast supplied from Pierre Gagniere, it has the perfect balance of chew and consistency. Each bite is fresh and doesn't get soggy over time. Depending on your mood you can go for a sweet tartine or a savory tartine.

And if you have a sweet tooth, they have a diverse selection of raw desserts. Their star is the Raspberry Dream Cake (gluten-free) which is the perfect cake to try if you've never had a raw dessert before. The base is made with pecans, almonds and dates. The white layer is made from cashews blended with coconut oil, lemon juice and lemon zest and finally, a layer of raspberry is topped with oats, dates and pecans.

Tartine is also open for breakfast and you can get a Chia pudding made with coconut milk and chia seeds, topped with banana caramel topping made of tahini, maple syrup and banana.

Their Birscher Museli is made of one banana and one cup raspberry - both frozen - coconut shavings, Garden of Life plant-based chocolate protein powder, raw cacao and coconut water. And their Smoothie Bowl is also packed with goodness. Did I mention that all three of these are vegan?

Their Almond Matcha Muffin (RMB 20) with raspberry stuffing is also perfect as an on-the-go breakfast quickie. If you need a quick sweet bite to go, their brownie is made from dates.
