Design-Focused Bar Creates Perfume Inspired Cocktails

Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-12-01

There’s a new bar in town in a neighborhood that’s in need of a watering hole. 1/3 Blossom has opened up on Yanqing Lu a little over a block away from Funkadeli and the whole Fumin Lu/Changle Lu craziness, and it’s pretty fancy.

1/3 Blossom has been opened by two partners, one of whom is a florist and the other who is an interior designer. There is no doubt that the design of the space is the most important aspect to them, and they have totally nailed it.

The outside of the venue is painted dark blue with bold lettering and has a hatch facing the street, embedded inside a giant gold apple, or maybe cherry, or some kind of fruit, that sells nice craft beers and ales.

They have a few stools outside that allow you to sit back, grab a quick beer and chill. Beers sell for around RMB 55 per glass - not cheap but not outrageous - and they have some pretty cool things on draft. Worth stopping by for a cheeky one if you’re in the area.

Head inside and they have an amazing outdoor seating area. It’s full of large curved benches and tables with umbrellas and big fans, it’s the perfect place to sit sipping a cool glass of wine and gossiping on a summer evening. The vibes are really chilled out, the music is low and the atmosphere is beautiful.

Inside the bar (it’s much bigger than you would think from the outside) there's a dimly lit gin/cocktail bar.

The main inspiration for their cocktails comes from classic perfumes. Beside each drink they have the name of the perfume they are meant to resemble. This is an interesting idea… and it works… a bit. Not really, but a bit.

The first cocktail we tried was the Oud Immortal, based on the perfume Byredo, apparently it smells amazing, but you can’t really tell because it’s served in a sealed plastic bag jammed into a bit of wood with some moss. So you can smell wood and moss. At RMB 98 it's a pretty pricey cocktail, but it tastes pretty good. Made with Nordes gin, sandalwood dry vermouth and Green Peace Pectin Base, it’s a savory herbal tasting cocktail that’s refreshing and alarmingly drinkable.

My favorite cocktail of the evening was the Ce Soir Ou Jamis, made with G’vine gin, Hawthorn infused Lady Gray Muscat, Smoked Kombucha and ginger. At RMB 108, it’s heading dangerously toward Bund prices for a bar that is pretty damn far from the Bund… but you’re paying for the design of the bar.

In terms of food, they are keeping it simple and serving basic snacks, and they have really outdone themselves here. You can find a range of things from simple fries to New Zealand Oysters and fresh veggies.

The oysters are absolutely amazing - plump, fresh and salty straight from New Zealand, the presentation is beautifully served on ice with heaps of dry ice added into the mix. The oysters are served with Kaffir limes on the side to squeeze over and are topped with a string of sea grapes that add a pleasant popping sensation when you chew. All in all I was very impressed, they’re RMB 158 for three, but for the quality, this seems pretty reasonable.

Next up was the selection of raw or lightly steamed vegetables, RMB 58, served with a garlic and herb dipping sauce. This is essentially a really novel way of serving a small sharing salad, but the flavors are good. The sauce was creamy and delicious and it’s a really lovely way of getting a few of your five a day!

Next up we tried the Une Rose, based on the perfume Frederic Malie, made with Hendricks, Rosehips, Raberry, Roasted plum vermouth and port, and this cocktail is SWEET. Really really sweet and very floral in taste and fragrance. It’s beautifully presented and is worth snapping a picture of. Oh, just don’t eat the gold butterfly or the leaf on the top of the cocktail. Tastes disgusting. Trust me I tried.

All in all 1/3 Blossom has a few kinks to work out, but it really is a beautiful space and it has some great minds behind it. I’m looking forward to sipping a cool class of white wine on their amazing terrace and seeing what the rest of the season will bring them.
