Hot Chick: A Wet Dream Inducing Chicken Shop

Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-12-01

The chicken shop of your dreams has just opened on Jiazhou Lu. Hot Chick, a new creation from the brilliant minds behind Barbarian and Bites & Brews is serving up rotisserie chicken that is going to make all of Shanghai up their chicken game.

Hot Chick essentially serves whole rotisserie chickens, baby rotisserie chickens, salads and rolls.

It’s the perfect place to stop by for lunch, to order on Eleme, or to grab something to take home for dinner.

The shop itself is teeny tiny, so if you manage to grab a seat, well done. But these guys are going to be focusing on delivery.

After trying their chicken, I don’t know why you would ever roast a chicken at home again.

A whole roast chicken will set you back a reasonable RMB 128 and would happily feed four people if you throw in a few sides. The chicken is imported from the US to ensure that the quality is high and you’re served a plump and succulent bird with a complimentary aioli dipping sauce on the side.

The skin is crisped to perfection, and the meat is tender and succulent. You can also choose to have the bird carved for you, so it’s as simple and lazy as chicken feasting can be!

For me, the real star of the show is their ‘baby chicken’ (RMB 48), a mini chicken that’s marinated in soy and ginger before being slowly roasted. The flavor of the marinade soaks deep into the bird leaving it super succulent and aromatic. This is a great order if you’re looking for dinner for two or a feast for one.

The chicken rolls are rolls to be talked about and then immediately ordered. Made with hot dog buns slathered in butter and toasted, they are sweet, salty and completely decadent; stuffed with rotisserie chicken meal stripped from the bone and topped up with tons of delicious fillings.

They have six different flavors you can choose from, all inspired from cities around the world. My favorites were the ‘Seoul roll’ and the ‘Cali Roll’. The Seoul roll is stuffed with Gochujang mayo, kimchi and cucumber and carrot slaw. It’s fresh and spicy with a real nod to South Korean flavors. The Cali Roll is stuffed with tons of avocado, arugula and a fresh and juicy tomato salsa. At RMB 35 a roll, they’re an absolute bargain!

Hot Chick also has an awesome range of soft drinks and draft cocktails available for delivery and in-store. My personal favorite is the Airy Aperol Spritz (RMB 40) which is the perfect drink for a fall evening. The raspberry and passion fruit lemonade (RMB 28) is also not to be missed. Super fruity and refreshing, it’s the perfect drink to go with a Cali Roll.

All in all, we are big fans of Hot Chick. We recommend you stop by and grab something for dinner, or get on Eleme and grab a bite for lunch. You will not be disappointed.
