Three Awesome BBQ Spots to Get Your American Juices Flowin'

Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-30

While many foods Americans love to eat are borrowed from other nations like the hamburger (Germany), the hot dog (also Germany), and the pizza pie (Naples, Italy), there is one type of food that everyone will agree is distinctly American: Barbeque.

The Beauty of American styled BBQ

Sure, you can get a spit-roasted lamb in Greece, barbacoa in Mexico, or a whole suckling pig in Spain. But try to get a rack of "fall-off-the-bone" beef ribs smothered in thick, tangy, spicy mustard-based BBQ sauce anywhere else in the world, and you'll either come away empty-handed or disappointed. However us Shanghai-ers are lucky as we have a few brave Amerians venturing where no other in the F&B world-China have dared to go China. They have opened barbecue restaurants right here in Shanghai.

Before we get down to exactly where you can get your meat fill, let’s dive, mouth first  into the basics of barbecue for all the non-Americans out there (me included).

The first thing that anyone should know about barbecue (or "barbeque" or "BBQ" as it's also often known), is that it is never a verb. One does not "barbecue." Similarly, a "barbecue" is not an event, nor is it a type of grill. The term "barbecue" means, quite simply, meat. Specifically, it is meat that has been cooked "low and slow" over charcoal or wood. Purists will never allow gas-cooked meat to be considered real "barbecue." And "vegetarian barbecue"...well, let's not get silly, shall we?

Each region of the US does barbeque differently and exploring the variations is awesome. For example, If you’re at a Texas style barbecue you’re going to dive into a big plate of brisket. In Kentucky you will be served up slow roasted mutton or pork.

Shanghai has a few great barbecue restaurants. Here are our three favorites.

Bourbon Cookhouse

Bourbon Cookhouse is, as the name would suggest, home to an astounding range of Bourbon plus some absolutely awesome barbecue. Originally hailing from the UK / New Zealand, their head chef Justin Birmingham (who began his career at a two-star Michelin restaurant) embarked on a pretty epic one-man voyage through America’s southern states to discover all there is to know about barbecuing. And he certainly came back inspired…

This restaurants main attraction is their Barbecue platter. Ringing in at RMB 488 it’s a reasonable price for more meat than any man could ever eat. (If you fancy taking me up on this challenge send a photo of your empty plate and bloated belly to the Shanghai WOW official Instagram.) The platter comes with beans, mash, and lightly smoked chicken that’s unbelievably tender. A smoked sausage stuffed with cheese (a highlight for me) and a rack of pork ribs (not a full slab because that would be insanity, though it is available) and a good sized portion of pulled pork also make up the meal. The brisket really is a dish to discuss. Instead of being carved in thick slabs with a big layer of fat at the top, Birmingham slices the meat super finely. This means when you grab a mouthful, you get a mixture of meat and fat that is absolutely bursting with flavor. Of course, it's all served with an impressive array of sauces made in house.

If the full platter is more than you can handle, then you can order each of these items individually from the menu. Literally everything on the platter was heart attack inducingly delicious, but I would recommend the pork sausage (RMB 68) and the quarter chicken (RMB 88) as my favorite meats of the meats on offer - although the brisket (RMB 128) and ribs (RMB 178, half slab) were pretty delicious too.

Ultimate Mac and Cheese RMB 58

If the Barbecue platter doesn’t completely destroy you, then you should order the deep-fried breaded pickles (RMB 48): sweet, fried, salty, vinegary and completely delicious. I had never had these before and thought I would never order them in a thousand years, but I’m now a complete convert and craving these crispy little suckers.

If a platter of meat bigger than your head isn’t what you’re jonesing for, then there are plenty of other options, including eight different types of burger. I tried the Double BBD Cheeseburger (RMB 138), and it was bloody yummy. The patties were succulent and juicy, the cheese melted to perfection and the bacon was as crisp as crisp can be. It was a hell of a burger, and it came with a generous portion of fries on the side, so you get a fair amount of bang for your buck!

Bulldog BBQ

Bulldog BBQ has been around for a little while now, situated on Julu Lu it’s the perfect spot to head for a meat packed dinner before you head out on the town. This is a humble little Texas style joint, cramped with limited seating and gets pretty busy because the food is off the charts delicious.

Comes in three sizes: 100gr RMB 45, 200gr RMB 85, 400gr RMB 160

The owner of Bulldog BBQ is a huge fan of Texas-style brisket, and after numerous disappointing tries to find the perfect brisket in Shanghai he finally decided to do something about it. He trained for months to find the perfect recipe, polish it and open a restaurant to serve it! The meat is marinated for 12 hours, then slow cooked for 24 hours before being grilled for 30 minutes. The result is perfectly cooked, perfectly tender and extra juicy.

Comes in three sizes: 200 gr RMB 45, 400gr RMB 85, 800 gr RMB 160

The pork ribs are absolute perfection, fatty, sweet and Moorish. We recommend this dish served with a side of roasted vegetables and mac and cheese. The sides offered at Bulldog are great--two sides paired with a main cost only RMB 15. It’s an awesome deal. You can get Grilled Vegetables, House Fresh Salad Macaroni and Cheese  Cream of Corn or French Fries.

BULLDOG

Price: Around RMB 50 per person

The Blind Pig

A long time inhabitant of Nanyang Lu, The Blind Pig is a bourbon and BBQ smoke house. The bourbon list is extensive and the food is everything you want it to be: greasy, fatty, naughty and reasonably priced.

They offer awesome meat platters that include ribs, brisket chicken and pulled pork. A three meat platter will set you back RMB 298, or you can go mad and order the family feast for RMB 398 which includes four different meats and choices of sides.

If you want to be a little more sedate and just go for a classic steak prices range from RMB 188 for a ‘cowboy cut’ to RMB 328 for a ribeye. The meat is high quality and you can choose how you like it cooked (medium rare is the only right answer.)

My favorite dish on the menu by far is the blueberry-glazed chipotle ribs. The tangy blueberry glaze perfectly complements the fatty succulence of the juicy pork. Served with coleslaw, pickles and corn on the cob, it’s a fair sized meal so brace yourself!
