How To Drink Like An Australian(in Shanghai)

ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-29

Remember our ‘How To Eat Like…’ series covering all kinds of cultures on food and where you may indulge this in Shanghai? Well now we’re here to tell you ‘How to Drink Like…’. Starting with one of the most famed drinking cultures in the world, Australia, we feature some of their highlights available in Shanghai. Aside from awesome craft beers, Australia is also home to a few key “new world” wine regions. Also, because we know that ‘drinks’ mean something other than alcohol in general, we also tell you about some soft drink options. So pick what you will, we are not responsible for any resulting ill…

Western Australia

Although the state extends across the western third of the continent, the wine regions of Western Australia are almost entirely situated in the cooler climate of its south-western tip. The region produces less than 5% of the country's wine output, but it is pretty top quality!

Famous Wines

Margaret River is at the south-west corner of the state and has a strong influence from the surrounding sea and ocean. Sauvignon Blanc is the most widely planted grape, followed closely by Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Brookland Valley Estate is one of the top 3% of wineries and a James Halliday 5-star winery (James Halliday is an Australian wine writer, critic, winemaker and senior wine competition judge).

Brookland Valley Estate

Here in Shanghai, Tom Morris of Lao Wines recommends the Verse 1 Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend which, in his opinion, really show the influence of the unique geography of this region. Both bottles are available for RMB 175 each at Laowines.

Deep Woods Estate

Deep Woods Estate also in Margaret River has won the James Halliday Winemaker of the Year award (2019) with Chief Winemaker Julian Langworthy at its helm. Established in 1987, it is one of Margaret River’s most awarded and highly regarded wineries. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s most awarded Cabernets, having won numerous accolades since 2012.

The Estate range is also multi-award winning and receives much praise, with prominent Western Australian journalist Ray Jordan noting, “Quite simply, you don’t expect to get this level of sophistication at this price point.” The 2016 Reserve Chardonnay, the 2016 Shiraz et al and the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot are available to try at at Henkes and Mr Willis. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia’s most awarded Cabernets, having won numerous accolades since 2012 and this is also served at the abovementioned restaurants.

Houghton

Another wine region in Western Australia is the Swan Valley, near Perth. Noted for its fertile soil, Houghton (established in 1836) is one of Australia’s oldest wineries and typifies a James Halliday 5-star winery of the region.

This Chardonnay shows off some of the strengths of the rich Western Australian soils says Tom Morris of Lao Wines.

Famous Beers

Forget Foster’s in a can, ‘Real Aussies’ never drink that! Every state in Australia is loyal to their own lager, so in general, check the stickers on the tap in a bar prior to drinking. Of great world-wide fame are Little Creatures ales. Little Creatures is a brewery in Fremantle (a town outside of Perth) and started with a group of friends who wanted to brew “an awesome, hop-driven American Pale Ale with a distinctive aroma and delicious flavor”.

They started in a shed (and former crocodile farm) on the water’s edge in Fremantle and opened in late 2000. By 2005, they spread to the east coast of Australia and opened a brewery in 2013 in Geelong (near Melbourne) in an old wool mill. Their signature pale ale takes nearly six weeks to brew, ferment, bottle and condition.

Here in Shanghai you can have a bit of the Little Creatures experience at Julu Lu - the pub is part of the Camel Hospitality Group. Sit and enjoy an afternoon of sampling the whole range with their tasting paddle priced at only RMB 78 (at that price you might need to find your favourite again and again..).

If you prefer a firmer recommendation, Australian Todd Pearson (Managing Director of the Camel Hospitality Group) recommends trying the Little Creatures signature Pale Ale (RMB 50) at Julu Lu or the Little Creatures Mornington Pale (RMB 50) at The Camel, a bar that is also part of the Camel Hospitality Group.

For something a bit more obscure and slightly heavier, the Little Creatures IPA ( RMB 55) or the Furphy (RMB 30 during Happy Hour) hit the spot says Todd. Brewed in Geelong (just outside of Melbourne, in the state of Victoria), the Furphy is a ‘refreshing ale’, and is Australian slang for a made up or exaggerated story. It is easy drinking ‘on a hot day with just enough hops to keep me interested’, says Todd.

So ‘hop’ along to any of these locations for your Little Creatures beer drinking experience! After all, drinking beer socially, a well-known Australian tradition, is best done in a bar. (We’d tell you no furphys).

Hardys Wine

In another wine region approximately 38km south of Adelaide, McLaren Vale, grapes were first planted in the region in 1838 and some vines more than 100 years old are still producing! Today there are more than 88 cellar doors in McLaren Vale and the region is well known for its dry red wines, especially those made from Shiraz. In 1878 Thomas Hardytransformed an old flour mill on the main street of McLaren Vale into TheHardys Tintara winery, and with his success the township of McLaren Vale beganto prosper and grow. Today, it is still a famous winery.

The William Hardy Shiraz is RMB143 a bottle and is rated at 91 points by James Halliday. The Hardy’s HRB Shiraz at RMB 370 has been rated 95 points. For something very rare to find in China, the Reynella Mclaren Vale Shiraz was praised by James Halliday with 97 points and is available for RMB 860. Eileen Hardy’s Shiraz, named after the matriarch of the famous Hardy wine family, carries only the best handpicked parcels of fruit! And finally….

An Australian Drinking Culture tip: When someone says, ‘Your shout mate’, this does not involve yelling at the top of your lungs but buying a round of drinks for a group of friends. Once everyone has finished their drink, another person from the group will buy a round, and so on until everyone has bought a round. We’ve now helped you avoid the comment ‘not from around here are ya’ mate?’ when you next visit Australia.
