Where to Buy Your Costumes for Halloween

Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-29

"Trick or treat!" Halloween is coming soon, and it's that time of the year again where little ghosts appear asking for treats, and tipsy jokers and vampires fill the streets at night. If you're planning to join in the fun, here are some shops to start you off with.

Ruby's Party

Opened in 2006, Ruby's Party shop has long been a Shanghai costume and party supply mainstay. Here you can find costumes for boys, girls, men and women in a multitude of styles and sizes. Fancy going out like cute Hello Kitty, anime character Naruto, or sex icon Marilyn Monroe? Ruby's Party shop has it all. Some costumes can be rented, so you don't have to worry about having to throw out your outfits after a one-time use. They also have hats, wigs, masks and all sorts of other spooky goodies.

Holiday House

For many years, this store has been one of Shanghai's top spots for Halloween costumes and party supplies. The front section is all party decorations and seasonal accessories, while the space in back is home to more quality costumes. They have everything from classic witches and superheroes to exotic yetis and more, as well as plenty of accessories to "make your own" outfit if you so choose.

Nantai Costume Company

If you're looking for an authentic Chinese costume, then you might want to take a look at this small store on Guangdong Lu. The shop is full of silk qipaos and traditional Chinese robes and opera costumes. They supply costumes to Peking opera actors, so quality is promised. Items can be tailored if you send in a request in advance. Some selected outfits can also be rented.

JaJaJa Party

Even though they're quite far from downtown Shanghai, it is one of the most furnished party accessory shops around. You can find Harry Potter, The Minions or Mario Bros costumes for the kids and as for the adults they have Jack Sparrow, Batman, Batgirl, Spiderman and other popular movie characters. If you prefer something a little simple, they have masks, fake tattoos and face-paint.

Qipu Lu

Qipu Lu is the poor man's clothing haven. They have one of everything you could ever want and 100 of everything you don’t want. You can go mad here and buy loads of truly bizarre items without breaking the bank. They have proper costumes, weird ‘high fashion’ and lots of t-shirt with miss-spelt English quotes.

Taobao

Of course there's always Taobao for the busy or lazy among us. One of the costume specialists there is Joy Toy Forest. They have classics like ghosts, prisoners and princesses as well as clowns and superheroes. Prices are quite cheap, and once you've made your choice they deliver it right to your door.
