Great Parks for Outdoor Exercise

Rachel ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-29

With this gorgeous weather, who wouldn’t want to head outside to get some exercise? Whether you want to go for a jog, do a quick HIIT workout, have a brisk walk, or even rock climb, here are our favorite parks to get in a little movement.

If you’re craving a massive park that’s got lots of space and not too deep into Pudong, head to Century Park.  The trees, grass, and flowers are all gorgeous, and you might even get a little tired trying to walk around the huge lake (which you can rent a boat to go on, fyi). There is lots to see and tons of families playing with their kids. There are bikes for rent and a small amusement park and some places to eat.

Hours: 7:00-18:00

Xuhui Riverside Park is a lovely stretch along the Huangpu River. There’s a wide sidewalk that you can walk on along the river, and you can even bring your dog! There are green spaces to sit on and a recently revamped climbing wall if you’re feeling adventurous.  On Saturday, a group of expats like to set up their slacklines here to practice, which is quite a show. It’s a great place to jog along the river, walk your dog, or spend a fresh Autumn evening.

Fuxing Park

Fuxing Park is an amazing park right in the center of the city. Although it can get crowded, it has big green spaces to roll out your mat and do some yoga or to jog around on the paths. Be aware of the crowds, however; I did a couple of yoga classes here, and we were heavily photographed. Enjoy the flowers and take in the fresh air.

Zhongshan Park

Zhongshan Park is a massive, green, breath of fresh air from the bustling Changning. The park is huge and even has a little track going around the back that you can run on. There are big green spots you can do exercises on or just enjoy walking or jogging on the paths. Lots of people like to fly kites with their kids here, which is a unique feature of the place. In the back they have some small rides for the kids.

Dagu Lu Park

Dagu Lu Park is a small and overlooked green space great to get in a jog. There are lots of trees and a big grassy space right in the middle and hardly anyone in the park. It’s a really nice change from the bigger parks that draw more people in, so you can have some alone time to break a sweat.

Gongqing National Forest Park

If you’re willing to make the trip up to Yangpu, this park is worth a whole day of exploring, not to mention getting a workout in. In the south part you have a small lake front and a section where you can follow the Huangpu River. There are a lot of paths for walking or jogging, green spaces, and ponds to take a break and stretch by. There are usually lots of people with their kids at the activities, but the park is big enough that it’s easy to find spaces to move around in.
