Take a Sneaky Peek at Ars & Delecto's Newly-Opened Second Floor!

Claire L. Squire ShanghaiWOWeng 2018-11-27

Newly opened Ars & Delecto has been making quite a splash in the Shanghai cocktail scene, but now, the Parisian style bar is expanding its repertoire. They've opened a café during the day on the ground floor, that serves light lunches and fresh cocktails (if you fancy a cheeky daytime drink), and coffee (if you’re being more respectable).

The Venue

The most exciting part is the second floor. It’s essentially a more grown-up version of the downstairs where they will be serving top-notch cocktails. The price tag is a little higher, but the quality of the drinks is high and you’re paying for the ambience.

Head up the stairs at the back of the restaurant and you will see a grey sliding door. Pushing it aside is like stepping into a quaint European cocktail lounge with its vintage vibes and a warm cozy atmosphere.

While the downstairs bar feels like a café, upstairs feels more like a living room.

There's a beautiful terrace outside that allows you to look down on Jinxian Lu as you sip on your cocktail. It’s not large, so to maximize space, they have made it standing only.

Ars and Delecto is Latin for arts and delights, and that it certainly is. The Japanese owners have paid amazing attention to detail in every area of this bar. It is absolutely beautiful, and the cocktails match the venue perfectly.

The Drinks

Shochu Bramble RMB 110

They have a range of cocktails, starting with the classics: they are all classic cocktails but with a unique twist making drinks with a range of western and eastern ingredients. It’s a really interesting way to play with some of your favorite drinks and expand your drinking repertoire.

My favorite ‘classic’ drink was the rum old fashioned (RMB 110). Rich and deep, the old fashioned is probably the utmost classic of classic drinks, originating from the early 19th century. Using rum instead of the standard whiskey adds a deeper tasting with a syrupy richness that is pretty unbeatable.

Corpse Reviver no.2 RMB 100

Their signature cocktails are where it gets really fun. Super experimental, the drinks get pretty out there. Whilst some of the concoctions are a little dubious, most are excellent. And honestly even the dubious ones are worth a try… they’re pretty cool.

The Blood and Root cocktail (RMB 110) is an incredibly interesting option on the menu in my option. Though it possibly belongs on the brunch menu, the cocktail is made from beetroot (interesting), Mezcal (delicious) and Yogurt. Yes. Yogurt. It’s pretty weird and it does have a hint of breakfast about it, but it’s seriously cool.  Definitely worth ordering if you’re there.
