New Opening: Get Ready to Party it UP Tonight

ShanghaiWOWeng 2019-04-05

Cheer UP, it’s Friday! Tonight, there’s a hot new bar celebrating their grand opening in Jing’an and you’re invited. Filled with graffiti walls, neon lights and a silo DJ booth, UP is a hip new addition to Shaanxi Bei Lu. A cocktail bar meets nightclub, they’re boasting those urban vibes straight out of New York City and want you to party UP under their crossroad of old meets new.

It’s the culmination of passion and grand ideas from Geo (Global Brand Ambassador for Camus, formerly of The Captain), Carlos Sotomayor (Elefante, Ekeko) and Victor (Revolucion) that’s vibrant and full of flavor. Hip tunes are played from a set of upbeat tracks by Filipino DJ Frac Attack, fruity drinks, and late night bar bites in a delicious pop-up, The Kitchen.

Ready to sink into New York City nightlife?

The Space

Split into sections showcasing some different but unified styles, the creative geniuses behind the design work are none other than Siu Tang (The Orange blowfish) and Max Trullas (MTMDESIGN).

As you walk into the entrance of the new venue, you’ll be greeted by bright lights, an orange staircase and a busy black and white wallpaper designed from name tag stickers.

As you walk through the doors on the second floor, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped right into New York City itself thanks to the vibrant décor throughout the venue.

The whole place oozes a hip, urban vibe: there’s an eye-popping display of neon thunderbolts that fly towards and on to the ceiling with a color-changing back board; a (very!) long bar equipped with golden Maneki-Neko’s for good fortune; pillars decorated in graffiti, cleverly crafted wall displays and incredible murals both inside and out on their terrace.

Even the bathrooms here are crazy photogenic with neon writing.

The Drinks

Aside from your regular choice of spirits, UP is offering some fruity and downright good-looking cocktails to match the décor for those insta-friendly photo opportunities.

Real Talk (RMB 70)

Need some Real Talk in your life? For RMB 70, you’ve got a balanced pineapple infused Bombay gin with Midori, lemon juice, a homemade raspberry syrup, egg white and activated charcoal.

Candy Crusher (RMB 90)

For a super photogenic drink that oozes feminine charm, Candy Crusher is a pink delight at RMB 90. SKYY vodka works as the base to this fruity cocktail with skittles syrup, fresh strawberries, light cream, cranberry juice and a dash of lemon juice.

Brooklyn Smack (RMB 90)

Brooklyn Smack (RMB 90) is for the whisky lovers with their Scottish Leader 12YO whisky leading the flavor base of this cocktail. Complete with lemon juice, cardamom syrup, grilled pineapple juice and egg white to finish.

Espresso not Martini (RMB 90)

Using Chairman’s reserve white rum, UP’s Espresso not Martini (RMB 90) is their twist on a classic using espresso (of course), the sublime blend of Arabica and alcohol that is Illy liquor, caramel syrup for a touch of sweetness and sea salt water to contrast.

For the most part, the majority of the cocktails we tried were light, fruity, sugary and easy on the palate…you might want to pace yourself so that ABV doesn’t creep up on you out of nowhere!

The Food

Helmed by Carlos Sotomayer of Elefante and Ekeko, UP holds space for an awesome little pop-up called The Kitchen, serving patrons late night bar bites until the early hours of the morning – perfect for when those drunken hunger pangs start to chime in.

After a few cocktails ourselves, we were eager to dose up on some food to soak up all the alcohol we had consumed and there was one type of comfort food that most definitely reminded us of late nights at home – fries!

Poutine it Up (RMB 88)

UP’s fries are of the waffle variety though and in their Poutine it Up (RMB 88) crispy golden lattices are topped off with a brisket gravy and truffle moliterno (Italian cheese named after the town it originates from in the southern region of Basilicata).

Once you’ve satisfied those cravings for fries, you HAVE to try some of their other bar bites too.

Who Said Gyoza? (RMB 55)

Presented in classic Chinese takeaway boxes that you’d typically see in a city like New York, the Who Said Gyoza? (RMB 55 / 8 pieces) are filled with prawn, Berkshire pork and a soy-orange dipping sauce.

Upper East Side Takeaway Box (RMB 68)

Similarly presented is the Upper East Side Takeaway Box (RMB 68) that’s filled with a delicious sweet and sour style chicken with Tso’s Sauce cooked in your typically international Chinese takeaway style and full of flavor.

UP's Tostada (RMB 99)

If nachos are usually your go-to for comfort food, leave those behind tonight and avoid that pang of disappointment you get every time you realize all the toppings are gone and all you’re left with are dry tortilla chips. With UP’s Tostada (RMB 99) they’ve ensured that never happens by loading marinated beef and chicken, black beans, jalapeno and guacamole on to every single piece. They’re juicy and moreish and have a little kick of heat that keeps you coming back for more.

During weekends, UP is also going to be serving a brunch menu consisting of dishes such as 2nd Avenue Benedicts (RMB 65) for your fix of poached eggs with braised beef brisket, spinach and a paprika hollandaise; Green Toast (RMB 88) for those who can’t live without avocado complete with brioche, pumpkin seeds and a citrus sour cream; as well as a Broadway Burger (RMB 88) featuring truffle, arugula, provolone and oven-dried tomatoes, and Cocoa Banana Waffles (RMB 65) for those with a sweet tooth.

So, after that little sneak peek, are you UP for something new tonight? You can swagger on home with some super cool merch too.
