Cheap Eats: Dishes Under RMB 50 Delivering True Thai Flavor

ShanghaiWOWeng 2019-04-05

In a small and cozy spot that's probably no more than 30sqm, you'll find one of our new cheap eats finds: Elephantea. They offer a surprisingly varied menu that consists mostly of roasted coffee, specialty drinks and a tea selection that you can choose from when needing some warmth and comfort as you stroll down Shaanxi Bei Lu.

White tile walls and counter make for a bright interior to give the small space that extra lift, while cute post-it notes adorn a section of the wall expressing love and little doodles.

On their roasted coffee menu you'll find your traditional Espresso (RMB 10), Americano (RMB 15) and Latte (RMB 22), but their special drinks are something to take note of if passing by. Alongside a signature Thai Tea Coffee (RMB 32) they also dabble in more unique flavor combinations such as a Mint Coffee (RMB 25), Coconut Coffee (RMB 25), an Orange Americano (RMB 25) and a specialty Butterfly Pea Lychee Drink (RMB 18) - a plant that's been used for centuries in Southeast Asia and is known for the beautiful blue hue it gives when used.

Thai Green Tea Latte (RMB 20)

Combining freshly made tea with that vibrant green matcha, we tried the Thai Green Tea Latte - a rich, flavorful and super smooth drink for sure and something we would definitely enjoy again, despite it being a little sweet.

Thai Rose Latte (RMB 22)

If you love floral flavors, then you'll love Elephantea's Thai Rose Latte too. The floral notes of rose are not too strong either. They're light and delicate, complementing the latte well and the whole drink is finished with a light sprinkling of dried rose petals for that picturesque finish.

The drinks aren't the main reason we are here though. We're here to try the food - yes, they serve food in this tiny shop. Astounding, we know.

What we know and love about Thai food is that dishes are aromatic, full of different color, flavor and have that spicy edge that we're totally addicted to. So, we were excited to see what Elephantea were able to bring to the table.

They have a very small food menu, consisting of light bites and snacks. From the Lemon Grass Chicken Wing (RMB 18) to a Bacon Mushroom Cheese Toast (RMB 13), there are only around five - six food items on the menu that you can choose from. While the Lemongrass Chicken Wings were definitely calling out to us, we could not resist trying the Tom Yum Goong meal.

In the warm and welcoming shop, the owner prepares the Chiang Mai style dish, using fresh seafood and vegetables as well as a Tom Yum soup base that has been imported directly from Chiang Mai.

For just RMB 33, you're presented with a little cup full to the brim with fresh seafood and vegetables, accompanied by a little wooden spoon to help you dig in. The flavors are strong, boasting a taste that is different to what you'd normally found in central Thailand, and it is spicy. So you might need a cold latte to wash it down if you're not so accustomed to the heat.

If you're looking for a quick bite and coffee, this is somewhere that you can definitely make time for when browsing Shaanxi Bei Lu, but if you're looking for a great sit down meal, this might not be the one for you.
