5 Healthy Brunch Spots to Power Up 2019

ShanghaiWOWeng 2019-04-05

Well, it's 2019, which means a fresh start and pesky resolutions that we always say we'll keep to but ultimately break after a month. One promise that we make to ourselves every year is to eat healthier, but with so many options throughout the city, it's super hard to keep on track when all we want to do is indulge - especially on brunch. To help everyone stay on track as much as possible, here are some awesome spots that will allow you to brunch with a clean conscious (unless you opt for the heartier options like waffles, pancakes or burgers...don't do that). Stay strong.

Moka Bros

Healthy, fast-casual restaurant Moka Bros has been delivering some pretty cool eats since they opened in Shanghai. Created by "the Bros" Chef Daniel Urdanata and Sommelier Alex Molina, they've adapted the concept of gourmet dining and turned it into something that's more affordable for the everyday.

Thai Salad (RMB 68)

Focusing on fresh ingredients and healthy living, they've got a hip vibe to them that we just can't get enough of, as well as fresh wholesome dishes that are made with love. They prepare everything from scratch to avoid preservatives and additives and rely heavily on power-foods such as protein-rich whole grains and antioxidant veggies; think Bro'Nola (RMB 30), Berry Smoothie Bowl (RMB 58), and much more.

They offer a wonderful range of salads in a variety of different flavors, such as the Thai Salad (RMB 68) that are filled with goodies like lettuce, shallots, tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, red chili, peanuts, cilantro and mint to enhance. You can choose beef, chicken or shrimp as your protein too.

If you can't do without a weekly dose of avocado during brunch, Moka Bros offer a Smashed Avocado Toast for RMB 38 made with Rye bread or multigrain toast. You can then choose to top this with a number of different ingredients that range from your traditional poached egg for an additional RMB 10 to crispy bacon (RMB 18), smoked salmon (RMB 18) and more.

To make sure you're really upping your healthy food game, swap your glass of Champagne for fruit or green smoothies!

TRIBE

Can't Beet Eggs Benedict with Salmon and Potato Rosti (RMB 58)

TRIBE is a brilliant organic café and restaurant that has been serving up some tasty and healthy food in both Beijing and Shanghai for a while now, allowing you to sink your teeth into everything from salads and wraps to grain bowls and noodles. Offering many vegetarian, vegan, paleo and gluten-free options throughout their entire menu, you can be sure that their organic creativity will help keep you fuelled and on track with your resolution to eat properly.

Tenacious Tofu "Voodle Ramen" (RMB 58)

Love noodles but have sworn them away for the time being? Then opt for a bowl of Tenacious Tofu "Voodle Ramen" instead for RMB 58. Using green and yellow zucchini as well as carrot voodles to make their "noodles" this dish is a great way to fill up on those much-needed greens and avoid the carbs. They add beautiful pan-fried tofu, mixed mushrooms, tofu skin, spinach, roasted St George's mushrooms to complete the dish, as well as a sprinkling of scallions for a final flash of green and added flavor.

Lusting after that Lamb Meatball Grain Bowl (RMB 88)

Need meat during your diet? TRIBE's Lusting after that Lamb Meatball (RMB 88) is a grain bowl that comes with delicious cheese-stuffed meatballs. Filled with couscous, roasted cauliflower, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, pickled red chili and mixed grains, it will feel like the grain bowl to beat all grain bowls.

Of course, for many of us, brunch means eggs that deliver the best #yolkporn you've ever seen. Well, give the Can't Beet Eggs Benedict (RMB 58) a try! Placed on a bed of potato rosti (made with shredded potatoes, diced onions, bell peppers, crispy mushrooms, thyme and melted mozzarella) this dish is layered with smoked salmon and poached eggs that are covered in a vibrant beet tofu Hollandaise, all accompanied by mixed seasonal veggies.

Brut Eatery

Red Tartine (RMB 72)

With its indie vibes and comfort-inducing dishes, Brut Eatery has been on the radar for a while now - even more so after opening their fourth location in Shanghai. They're known for their modern retro style, the super adorable illustrations that adorn every coffee mug used and the mismatched furnishings that range from rattan lamp shades to refurbished wooden armchairs.

Their philosophy in food focuses on what is natural, limiting the use of preservatives and sourcing ingredients for reliable and responsible providers. So they make everything in-house, from the dressing to the yogurt!

Green Tartine (RMB 62)

For some healthier brunch options, you could try their Red Tartine (RMB 72) which is a wonderful combination of smoked salmon on a white bean purée that's accompanied by pickled beetroot, housemade yogurt, arugula, potato and salad on their farmer's bread.

Or for a much-needed dose of avocado and egg, they serve a beautiful Green Tartine for RMB 62 with guacamole, radish and a gorgeous Japanese Onsen egg on sourdough bread, alongside a serving of potato and salad.

Hours: Monday to Sunday, 8am-11pm

Alimentari & Degusteria

Salmon Toast (RMB 55): salmon, cucumber, herb mascarpone, poached egg, olives and capers on homemade Italian bread

This Italian-style deli, kitchen, and gourmet market is an extension of the original location on Anfu Lu but with an expanded menu and more of a hangout vibe. The goal of the restaurant is to be like an Alimentari in Italy, a mom-and-pop corner shop where you go to buy assorted cheeses, meats, and fresh ingredients. Pop over to the deli counter for a freshly made sandwich or purchase some cheeses and olives for entertaining guests at home later.

Spinach & Avocado (RMB 60)

Taking that concept a step further, the Degusteria piece of the restaurant mainly focuses on small bites, snacks, breakfast items and cocktails to dig into. Alimentari & Degusteria offer an all-day brunch menu from 9am-6pm that features a range of sandwiches, toast, and even sweet treats if you end up caving.

Pumpkins (RMB 65)

We're here to focus on the healthier options though, and they've just released a couple of new items for diners to enjoy. The Pumpkins (RMB 65) features the autumnal squash as the feature of this dish, roasted and combined with spinach leaves, sun-dried tomatoes, black olives, feta cheese, pine nuts and a drizzle of balsamic cream dressing.

However, no brunch is complete without avocado, so they also have the Spinach & Avocado (RMB 60) that are complemented by red beetroot, nuts, radish, orange, homemade ricotta, kalamata olives and a balsamic oil dressing to finish too.

O'Mill's Artisan Bakery

O'Mill's is a force to be reckoned with in Shanghai's bakery scene. Serving as both a bakery and restaurant, their Yongjia Lu location can often be seen full to the brim with people waiting in line to enjoy their sourdough bread and fusion cuisine.

We can't get enough of the variety of toast options they provide between 8am and 5pm, which includes the likes of a Homemade Gravlax with Rye Bread (RMB 58) complete with dill, avocado, cherry radish and a stunning layer of their beet sour cream all served on a rustic wooden platter.

However, they've also brought out a couple of new items for their brunch menu this winter, which includes the fabulous Energy Plate for that much-needed energy boost we all need. Your plate will be filled with a fresh salad, sliced avocado, scrambled egg, olives, bacon and a slice of their gorgeous sourdough bread that's made in-house.
