Shanghai's love affair with gin is undeniable, and who can overlook the tremendous splash it's already making in the market? With two gin brands calling China their home – Peddler's Gin made in Shanghai and Crimson Pangolin distilled and bottled in Changsha – cocktails made with gin are light and refreshing.

Juniper berries, where gin comes from

Common pairings include coriander seeds, tangerine peel, berries and we love it because of how versatile it is. Did you know Peddler’s Gin has a menu of gin cocktails that use ingredients like Sichuan peppers, Buddha's hand and Lotus flowers? Or, that Crimson Pangolin is infused with a secret blend of eight botanicals sourced from Hunan, Hainan and Sichuan provinces? What's more, Japanese Roku Gin is hand-crafted from the local plants in their best season: with cherry blossom and their leaves in spring, Sencha and Gyokuro tea leaves in the summer, Japanese sansho pepper in the autumn, and Yuzu peel in the winter!

No matter what mood you are trying to set, gin cocktails are one of the coolest mood setters. Want to know more? Keep scrolling...

Go Romantic

Everything is in the mood

A bar date can often be a great success or disaster and, as alcohol is often involved, the ambience of the place is very important. If the wrong bar is chosen, it might lead to an unhappy end to your date and leave a bad impression on the person.

For those who don’t have any knowledge of good bars, Epic is a great and safe option that is bound to win your date over.

Dale the Rose with Manuka honey, Beefeater Gin, Mexican Worm Salt.

Go Classic

Go for a fail-proof option

We cannot talk about gin without the mention of the classic Martini. This is an iconic cocktail and mixed alcoholic beverage made with a simple mix of gin and vermouth that's usually garnished with an olive or lemon twist. There are two schools of thought when it comes to making a good Martini: you either like it shaken or stirred.

The Artist Bar & Bistro provides a compromise between the two different types of Martini - shaken and stirred - using Vesper Martini.

Their martinis are made from Ki No Bi (‘The Beauty of the Seasons’), a dry gin from Kyoto, Japan.

The head bartender, Nick, chooses to remain on the fence and provides a third option to make the Martini, where more air is let into the alcohol, giving it a unique twist and taste.

For many, staying fit has become a lifestyle priority. Rather than torturing yourself with a glass of plain water, opt for a gin and tonic, which is below 100 calories and helps you drink in guilt-free indulgence.

Located at Nanjing Dong Lu and with a beautiful terrace, FOGO is a great place to spend your cheat day. Every Wednesday and Thursday night, the bar will provide eight different types of gin and accompanying bar snacks for a guilt-free treat.

The best part is that they have the KEW Gin, which is a partnership between the Royal Botanic Garden and Dodd’s Gin and Two Tall Brothers Tonic.
