Today, the 66 Shikumen buildings have been renovated and restored and are now collectively known as the trendy landmark THE INLET.
All 66 SH-style buildings are preserved
The location of THE INLET is at the prime Hongkou District.
It is an important birthplace of Shanghai's literary and art scene.
The establishment of the Hongkou Grand Theater here in 1908 marked the birth of the first official cinema in China.

Famous writers in history used to visit the coffee shop here to order a cup of coffee.
In the early years, businessmen from Guangdong moved here and built "Gong Yi Fang", a commercial complex.
The 66 Shikumen buildings and eight lanes are all preserved.
A British-style triplex building in the park was the old residence of many Shanghai film stars.
The Yihong Yuan was once the largest printing factory in China and even in the Far East. After its completion in 2024, it will open to the public and be known as the Shanghai Literature Museum.

"Time Waterfall," by Japanese installation artist Tatsuo Miyajima, stands at the junction of Wujin Road and Sichuan North Road.
Jianhua Liu
Artist Jianhua Liu's "Color" is a sculpture made of hand-kneaded clay, the same material used to make the ceramic part of the Shikumen roof.

Many young brands have settled in THE INLET, and it gives the old building complex new life.
MUSEUM&MORE is the exclusive agent in China of international first-tier IPs, such as the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the National Gallery.
Now it has a pop-up store in THE INLET.
Each color block in the store has been carefully selected by the designer and represents the artists themselves.
Giftopia
Giftopia has a collection of brands and is a great place to pick out gifts. Of the items sold here, 30 – 40% are exclusive limited-edition products.
The store also sells three-dimensional zodiac greeting cards, which have won the internationally renowned IF design award.
CHUMS occupies the second floor with tents, camping tables and chairs, outdoor lights, and more.
Yu Yin She
Famous Peking Opera actress Peiyu Wang opened her studio in THE INLET.
The second floor is an opera classroom, and the first floor displays the teaching courses and products she developed.
ARK
ARK’s owner Yin Zhu was the founder of China's first live-house.
ARK combines live music with music operas and is a bar and café in one.
The café named naomao cafe is located right downstairs.
Press Matter
Press Matter is an art institution that integrates the production, printing, and publishing of handmade prints.
Take in the beauty of handmade production and works here.
There is also an illustration exhibition that features works by young artists and an ice-cream store that serves a wide variety of flavors here.
Reclothing Bank
Reclothing Bank is a brand founded more than ten years by Chinese independent designer Na Zhang.
Clothes here are designed and made from old clothes.
The store’s interiors also adopt a "reconstructed" theme.
Starbucks
The design of the Starbucks store incorporates characteristics of THE INLET.
The whole store is divided into two floors, and the first floor is a brown theme space.
On the second floor, visitors can get a glimpse of the Hongkou street scene in the past, as well as the first cafe in Shanghai, Hongkou Cafe, which was born in 1866!
