Michelin Guide coming to Shanghai
After years of rumours, the Michelin Guide is officially coming to Shanghai.
Since launching editions in Tokyo (2007) and Hong Kong and Macau (2008), the guide's arrival in Shanghai has been hotly anticipated. But wait no longer Michelin-obsessed food fanatics, because it’s finally comingaccording to the company's official WeChat. Word is the first round of restaurants to be included in the Michelin Guide Shanghai 2017 will be announced in the autumn of this year.
So, what’s this Michelin Guide that everyone has been yapping about, you might ask - if you’ve been living in a cave somewhere since 1900, when the tyre company Michelin published its first edition.
Originally a tool to help French drivers wear out their tyre tread and get them travelling around the country visiting hotels and restaurants, the Michelin ‘red guide’ has gained considerable clout over the last century in the global dining scene; so much so that the loss of a star can have serious repercussions for a restaurant, and often (sadly) its head chef.
Expect the guide's arrival here to have a huge effect on the dining scene, as people flock to the establishments - if any - that receive the coveted stars.
Stars aside, we are certainly hoping that Shanghai does well in the Bib Gourmand stakes, which highlights restaurants that offer exceptionally good food at moderate prices. And we’re hoping that as per the 2016 Hong Kong/Macau guide, they’ll also include a section on Shanghai street food.
