A big, freaky Tim Burton exhibition is coming this weekend
If you've been disappointed by slowly trudging around the decidedly un-creepy Alice in Wonderland maze at Shanghai Disneyland recently, you ought to find a stronger dose of Tim Burton's unique brand of weird in Shanghai this weekend as Lafayette hosts The World of Tim Burton exhibition.
The arts centre located above Xintiandi metro station will be home to all sorts of bizarre models and props from Burton's films, with organisers promising a show that will create 'the experience of walking directly into the comedic and ironic, dark yet fantastic world of the genius director.'
Originally curated for New York's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), where it became one of the institution's most attended exhibitions of all time, The World of Tim Burton has been touring the globe since 2010. It opens in Shanghai this weekend with '150 new works from Tim Burton not seen in New York MOMA exhibition', including some of his rarely viewed napkin sketches - ideas and characters scrawled on tissues from various bars and restaurants.
Otherwise, you can expect models and artworks from some of Burton's classic films over the course of his career, which has taken in the likes of Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Beetlejuice, Batman, Mars Attacks! and more.
The exhibition is due to open Sunday 26 June and run until Monday 10 October at the Lafayette Arts and Design Centre. Tickets are 150RMB and are available on the door or online through Gewara.
