Nelly, The Cribs and more on Concrete and Grass Festival line-up

2016-08-12 TimeOutShanghai

Hip pop star Nelly, former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus and Tokyo indie-pop outfit Sekai No Owari are set to headline a diverse line-up at Concrete and Grass Festival in Shanghai in September, the music fest that was formerly known as 'Echo Park formerly known as Black Rabbit'. Probably.

We've had the full line-up out in our print magazine for a couple of weeks now, but have been holding back on putting it online as the official announcement from promoters Split Works has been stalled (we're going to take a stab in the dark and say it's down to the bureaucracy). So here's who is 'rumoured' to be playing. Possibly.

In addition to the above, the international acts will include British garage rockers The Cribs (pictured below) - who once declared today's indie rock scene to be utter rubbish - Harlem rapper A$AP Ferg and LA noise-rock act HEALTH.

Ninja Tune-signed electronic producer Machinedrum and Fabric, RinseFM and Boiler Room regular Ben UFO will join good times dance-pop outfit The Go! Team, DJ Premier (formerly one half of Gang Starr) and rising rap star Father at the Shanghai Rugby Club site over the Mid-Autumn holiday. Silverstein, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, About Tess, Milwaukee Banks, The Algorithm, Solids, Future (a French noise-rock trio, not the rapper) and Die! Die! Die! will also feature.

Cantopop bad boy Edison Chen heads up the Mainland and Hong Kong contingent. Having successfully rehabilitated his public image following the infamous 2008 sex photo scandal, Chen should prove a big draw, while Concrete and Grass will offer another chance to see excellent Dalian post-rock act Wang Wen in action following their packed-out album release show at MAO Livehouse in June.

Chui Wan, Mr Graceless and Birdstriking - all widely seen as among the leading lights of Beijing's rock scene - will also be on the bill along with Do Hits luminary Jason Hou and Chinese post-punk stalwarts ReTROS.

The festival is at Shanghai Rugby Club on 16-17 September. Presale tickets are 180RMB for students, 230RMB for adults and 360RMB for a two-day pass; after that prices on the door will be 230, 300 and 440RMB in those same categories.
