Gourmet cheese, meat and more: 4 reasons to love GroupMall
If you haven’t heard of GroupMall, you’ve been missing out on a whole world of affordable speciality foods. The service launched earlier this year when founder Gianmarco Meli set out to answer to Shanghai’s call for high-quality foreign and domestic foods at more reasonable prices. His solution? To connect consumers directly to suppliers.
In a (tasty) nutshell, the platform gets you great deals through bulk purchases that are divided amongst buyers in the community. There are two ways for you to get the goods. The first is through ‘group buys’ on special items, where there’s a quota for shares to be purchased, and once it’s met, they buy in bulk, divide and send it to you. The second way is through ‘hot deals’, which feature seven new products available each week that you can buy outright.
GroupMall has been operating since April solely via its WeChat store (ID: groupmall-china), but now the team has launched their website at groupmallchina.com, where you can get the same deals, but with more payment options than those accepted through the WeChat store. It’s best to check in each week to see what’s on offer and catch hot items while they last. But for now, here are four superb buys we love from GroupMall, and a special deal for Time Out Shanghai readers.
Cheese, please!
Need we say more? Okay, we will… GroupMall will help you get cheese – like, actually good cheese – from all over the world. When we were browsing we saw cured Manchego cheese at 44RMB for 150g and aged Comte at 799RMB for a massive 2.5kg wedge.
Tibetan specialities
To help you keep things extra fresh in the kitchen, GroupMall also works with farmers in Tibet to bring beautiful local black truffles (the recent batch came in at 65RMB for 75g), homemade yak butter and eggs fresh from the farm to Shanghai.
Meat, sweet meat
Find all kinds of juicy buys, from grass-fed beef and cured Serrano ham to awesome barbecue sets of sausages, wurst, burgers and more. Fish, too. We recently grabbed 500g of Uruguayan skirt steak for 85RMB and just under 1kg of Salame Milano for 135RMB.
