5 must-see art exhibitions to check out this month
January may feel as if it's off to a slow start, but there are a number of art exhibitions to plug the gaps in your weekend schedule. Check out these five exhibitions before they are gone for good.
Overpop
In the form of a curatorial conversation between Jeffrey Deitch and Karen Smith, the artists in this group work across media, extending their vision through painting, sculpture, film and performance.
Yuz Museum. Until 15 Jan. 80RMB.
Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou
Masterpieces will showcase a panorama of original artworks in France from 1906 to 1977, with one work per year and per artist, including world famous masters such as Picasso and Matisse, through to lesser-known names. The exhibition is a opportunity to share the wealth of the collections of the prestigious Centre Pompidou with the public in China: from sculptures and installations to paintings and drawings, photography, film and design.
Shanghai Exhibition Centre. Until 15 Jan. 150RMB.
Tale of Two Cities
After success with the primary Tale of Two Cities project with Parisian silkscreen pioneer FrenchFourch, this time the IdleBeats team are looking to Southeast Asia, and have invited art collective Sticky Fingers Art Print Cambodia to write the second chapter of the collaborative tale. Reflecting the rich lives of locals in both Shanghai and Phnom Penh, visitors can expect an explosive collection of print works from the two groups, including a photo documentary detailing IdleBeats’ Cambodia adventure.
65 Songyuan Lu. Until 9 Jan. Free.
Prediction Laboratory
Sun Xun's work explores new ways to challenge our beliefs in ostensible truths and convincing lies, creating surreal stories and alternative narratives to explain the world around us. Prediction Laboratory takes the form of 12 video animations, presented in a dark tunnel, assaulting the senses with a jumble of mechanical and natural noises. The animations display a mixture of themes from desolate future landscapes, nature and Chinese folklore, with the videos created in a variety of ways, from standard photography, to fine painting and woodcarvings.
Yuz Museum. Until 15 Jan. 80RMB.
Shanghai Biennale 2016
Alongside the main exhibition, other highlights of the Biennale include the project 51 Personae, a community-based project that aims to present the perspectives of ordinary people from every corner of the city. The project will feature three participants per week over the 17-week duration of the Biennale, displaying their ideas in unique and interesting ways, including a ferris wheel ride, a radio show and a football match. Keep updated with a long list of one-off events held during this year's biennale on the Time Out Shanghai website.
Power Station of Art. Until 12 March. 20RMB.
