Shanghai updates '7 Don'ts' of public behaviour

Adam Hopkins TimeOutShanghai 2019-04-12

Ever wondered just what's acceptable when it comes to public behaviour in our fair city? Turns out there's an official guide to help us minions go about our daily lives in social harmony, and it's just had a revamp. The Shanghai Spiritual Civilization Construction Commission Office, or the SSCCCO for short (well, sort of for short) has updated the 'Seven Don'ts' of public behaviour for the first time in 22 years.

Five of the previous 'Dont's' have been discarded, with only 'Don't litter' and 'Don't jaywalk' making the cut this time around, according to Sixth Tone. The new additions are as follows: 'Don't waste food', 'Don't cut in line', 'Don't let pets disturb neighbours', 'Don't park vehicles in a disorderly manner' and 'Don't make noise.'

We're assuming the rule to do with parking also applies to rental bikes (you can't just leave them anywhere), while the 'Don't' regarding pets will have been brought about by the large increase in pet ownership across the city in recent years. Good news if you aren't a fan of your neighbour's yapping dog...

The discarded 'Don'ts' – which you still shouldn't really do in public places anyway – include no cursing, smoking, damaging public property, destroying green spaces and spitting. Yep, people used to do those apparently.

Other things we'd like to see banned from public places include people on the bus playing music out of their mobiles without headphones and couples who are a bit OTT with the PDA. However, for the time being, the updated 'Seven Don'ts' should suffice.
