5 fabulous red velvet desserts in Shanghai

2017-02-13 Elysia Bagley TimeOutShanghai

With Valentine's Day around the corner, it's all about the red, white and pink. We've sought out Shanghai's best red velvet treats just for you... ain't we sweet?

Naked Red Velvet Cake, Ever Naked

This one's a treat for those who like their red velvet just a touch less sweet than the more sinful versions – but there's no sacrifice of deliciousness here. This naked cake from Ever Naked bakery has moist, cocoa-kissed cake with layers of smooth, buttery frosting that's lighter on the cream cheese flavour. Plus, it's beautifully assembled. They also have another version which is decorated more traditionally (i.e. not naked).

Ever Naked 891 Julu Lu, near Changshu Lu, Jingan district. 138RMB for 6-inch cake; 46RMB per slice.

'Lovelet' Red Velvet Ice Cream Sandwich, Melt

Cream cheese ice cream sandwiched between two soft red velvet 'meltcakes'. At Melt, they deepfreeze the ice cream so it stays frozen long enough for you to take your dessert sammies away without making a big mess... though we expect you'll eat it long before you make it home.

Melt 159 Madang Lu, near Xingye Lu, Huangpu district. 35RMB per sandwich.

Red Velvet Cupcake, Al's Bakery

Al's red velvet cupcakes are a classic treat. They've got rich but fluffy cream cheese frosting; dark red cake with a touch of cocoa, and a healthy sprinkle of cream cheese crumbles... plus, they're the perfect size for eating two and not feeling quite so guilty. Be sure to try a slice of their mammoth red velvet layer cake, too.

Al's Bakery 174 Xiangyang Nan Lu, near Fuxing Zhong Lu, Xuhui district. 16RMB per cupcake.

Metropolis Red Velvet Cake, Pantry's Best

A staple when it comes to cakes in Shanghai, Pantry's Best version of red velvet cake is a rich, decadent choice for those of you who like it traditional. They combine layers of feathery red-chocolate cake with super tangy cream cheese icing, and top it off with frosting flowers and more crumbled cake. And, an added bonus, they deliver.

Pantry's Best pantrysbest.com. From 199RMB (6-inch).

Red Velvet Cookies, Strictly Cookies

Not your typical red velvet dessert, but we love them anyway. Strictly Cookies give these soft, chewy cookies an extra kick by loading them up with chunks of chocolate. And of course, it wouldn't be red velvet without sweet cream cheese frosting spread from edge to edge.

Strictly Cookies First Floor, Store 103, 1166 Yanan Xi Lu, near Panyu Lu, Changning district; strcitlycookies.com.15RMB; 60RMB for five.
