Finally! Share bikes for women are here...
The bike-sharing craze that has taken Shanghai and other Chinese cities by storm in recent months has revolutionised the way we Shanghai ren get around the city. For typically less than one kuai a pop, you can hop on one of the thousands of bright orange, blue, or yellow bikes scattered on the sides of the roads, and get anywhere in Shanghai pronto, leaving said bike wherever you like (within reason).
Frustratingly, this world of uber-convenience has so far only been available to men, who wear trousers and don't carry handbags. You know men? Thankfully, the people behind the bright yellow brand of bikes, Ofo, have come to our salvation.
Flowers not included, but should be carried at all time by any princess worth their salt (or sugar)
Ofo has just launched a 'Princess' bike, which is like a regular Ofo bike, but for princesses. Or just those of a fairer disposition, like women. It remains to be decided whether those who merely identify as princesses are allowed to ride the bikes...
At a glance, the Princess bike looks a lot like the standard Ofo offering: both are yellow, both are bikes. But look closer, and you'll see that the Princess bike has actually been finely tuned for the princesses among us. The seat is leather and so softer on your delicate behind; a 'cane' basket is attached in which you can place your tiara, puppies and ambition, so that none of them disturb passers-by. The whole bike is also 'lighter and easier for women to handle', according to the Straits Times.
Don't be fooled: this person might be wearing trousers, but they are also wearing heeled shoes and are holding a princess bike – definitely a woman.
Around 10,000 ladybikes have been launched in Shanghai and Beijing – women in the rest of China will have to wait a few months before they can keep up with all the men whizzing past them on their macho Mobikes. But just like the vote, private property ownership and high quality yet affordable eyelash extensions, good things come to those who wait.
